The best way to evolve and become a competent programmer is to put into practice the concepts seen during the theoretical parts of the classes. Programmers become experienced (regardless of age) by dedicating many hours to coding. Through practice arise doubts, difficulties and from there it becomes possible to work out solutions and put them into practice.
