About Jessica
I have been tutoring maths for a year and have previously taught science (primarily physics) in secondary schools up to A-level. I have taught a variety of students of varying attainment grades including SEND classes. References available for both tutoring and teaching. I obtained my master’s degree in Physics from the University of Southampton and trained to be a teacher with UCL’s Institute of Education, gaining a post-graduate certificate in education (PGCE). The PGCE taught me the value of using effective pedagogy and teaching research in your lessons to get the best out of students.

I base my teaching on the national curriculum and exam specifications while using accessible teaching approaches and education research (such as diagnosing misconceptions, using creativity in teaching and cognitive load theory). I find it imperative to scaffold, break down and differentiate learning materials for different learners so that everyone can achieve their best results.
A typical lesson might start with some diagnostic homework beforehand, tackling the areas that students struggled with in the homework by working through scaffolded examples together and gradually taking away that scaffolding. I also try to include something new and exciting in each lesson to try and stretch the students. I like to use quizzing apps to keep lessons fun and I make sure to engage students by asking lots of questions and asking them to show their working at all times.
I think it is important to build a relationship with the student, so I will spend a short time at the start of our first lesson getting to know you or your child and we can build trust from there. With this foundation, I find that I can get the most out of a student to ensure they reach their full potential.
