About Brandon

I spent many years as a session musician, playing different styles of guitar and bass, then underwent classical training for my BMus, and studied flamenco for my MA. I'm currently doing a composition PhD, and my schedule is generally my own, so I'm flexible with availability. There isn't much I haven't played at one time or another, and I have an intimate understanding of technique. I can help with performance anxiety, too, and if you are looking to do graded exams, then I have a tried and tested approach: my students have a 100% record of getting distinctions. I also provide support for music studies, from Nat 4 to Degree level, including academic skills.

Our goal is to get you playing confidently, at whatever level you are aiming for. Everyone is a suitable student as far as I'm concerned, and I enjoy teaching at all levels. I have been playing and writing music for a long time, and I see teaching as an important part of being a musician - it keeps me sharp, because everything I say to students applies to me too.

The main message is this: I can promise that if you have a desire to play better, and if you are prepared to practice in the way we agree, you will get results.

Approach
The process is the same whether you are learning to improvise on electric guitar, improving intonation on fretless bass, a classical guitarist working on tremolo, or a composer learning how to modulate - we start where you are, look at where you want to go, then work on what you need to do to get there. As we progress you will understand exactly what you need to do to be able to play your favourite pieces - and if you like, how those pieces were written, and how you might go about writing your own. No matter which style of music you play, it's what you do in between lessons that makes the difference.

Lesson Content
Lessons don't have a fixed structure, but they are usually split into two parts. The first part is about technique, the second about whatever pieces you are working on - which, in turn, guides the focus of your technique. You will receive a copy of all the exercises we cover in lessons, and I am always only an email or a phone call away.

First Lesson
The first lesson is a bit different, as we are trying to find out where you've come from, and what your aspirations are, but still all you need is your self and your instrument. Good technique is about ease of movement, and that means breathing easy and working with your body. I have students from age 4 to around 74 - I find that music is quite personal and individual, and has little to do with age. I always try to make sure that lessons are enjoyable, especially for younger students. I have even been know to introduce the odd impromptu song to entertain children during a lesson (and, believe me, I am NO singer!).

Learning new things can at times be difficult, but music should never feel like a chore.
