About Rowena
I completed my Master's degree in Cello Performance at The Guildhall School of Music & Drama this summer, and achieved my undergraduate degree with First Class Honours in Cello Performance at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where also gained my 'LRAM' teaching qualification.
I work as a Freelance Cellist, both performing and teaching. I have 10 years of teaching experience with beginners through to grade 8 standard and beyond, working with children as young as 5, right through to adult students. I have experience working leading groups of cellos, as well as one to one.
I currently play with The Outcry Ensemble in London, and teach at the Colourstrings Music School on Saturdays in Kingston.
In previous years I attended the Purcell School, the Junior Department at the Royal Academy of Music (JRAM), NCO (National Children's Orchestra) and NYSO (National Youth String Orchestra), so I am very familiar with the standards required if you are looking to go down a similar path. I have experience coaching students through auditions, and one of my previous students now studies at JRAM, and has attended NCO & NYSO.
I have significant experience working with children and young people from my work with the National Youth String Orchestra as the Administrator & Pastoral Director. I am also First Aid & DBS certified.

From January 2027: availability for new students in central Maidenhead.
My primary focus in every lesson is for my students to be having fun! For beginners and earlier levels, I like to make sure my students always have a wide range of pieces at their fingertips so they never feel stuck, or have time to get bored.
Since training to work at the Colourstrings Music School in Kingston, I have been using the colourstrings method for my private students too, as I find that it sets up a much stronger technical foundation, whilst maintaining the music as the core focus.
Whether or not a student wants to work towards any graded exams is decided individually, as whilst these can prove to be beneficial markers of progress, they are not for everyone.
With more advanced students, we will work on technique; building a strong base with exercises and scales to then allow for more enjoyment from all the amazing music that is out there. The primary focus is always on the music, but sometimes a little legwork is required to elevate playing!
I love to play cello with my students - often working on duets - as I believe it builds confidence and it can be a lot more enjoyable to play with someone rather than on your own all the time. I am very aware that every student will have their own individual learning style, and I endeavour to adapt my teaching to be accessible to all.

I’ve had the pleasure of receiving cello tuition from Rowena for just over a year. I’m new to Cello and in my 50’s, my only prior experience of stringed instruments is bass and acoustic guitar. I haven’t been reading music previously but playing by ear.
Rowena has patiently met me where I am in my musical journey, providing solid foundations in good technique and music theory.
With Rowena’s guidance , I was quickly able to move to playing simple classical pieces and duets whilst she reinforced the important foundations around posture, bow hold, fingering and importantly remembering to breathe!
I’m thoroughly enjoying our musical journey and would highly recommend Rowena’s tuition whatever stage you’re at in your cello journey.
Seb TaylorMy daughter has been learning cello with Rowena since December 2024. As a parent, I have been very impressed by her teaching approach and the progress he has made in a relatively short time.
Rowena is patient, encouraging and highly professional. She creates a positive learning environment where children feel comfortable and motivated to improve. My daughter genuinely looks forward to his lessons every week, which says a lot about her ability to make learning both enjoyable and rewarding.
One thing I particularly appreciate is how she adapts her teaching to the individual student. She challenges her appropriately while building his confidence, and we have seen significant improvements in both his technique and musical understanding.
I would highly recommend Rowena to any parent looking for a dedicated, supportive and inspiring cello teacher. She has played an important role in my daughter’s musical development, and we are very grateful for her guidance.Rowena's teaching style creates a warm, welcoming and safe space for people of all backgrounds to learn music. As her colleague of a number of years, I can vouch for her professionalism, infectious enthusiasm and incredible musicianship.
I have worked and performed with Rowena over the last few years and can attest to her high level of musicianship, talent, dedication and passion. Her kind nature and drive makes her a fantastic colleague and I have no doubt that you will greatly appreciate the care she puts into everything she does and you will love learning with her.
Rowena has both been my colleague in musical performance (chamber music and orchestral), and my manager in pastoral roles with the National Youth String Orchestra. She is a highly effective communicator, compassionate person and exceptional musician. I would recommend Rowena as someone who will pursue excellence in her students with a compassionate yet empowering approach to coaching - supported by a wide range of musical expertise and experience.
