About Terry

I have accumulated more than 40 years of Personal Practical Knowledge (PPK) through tertiary education and working in or with significant business and government enterprises, over much of Australia and overseas. I am enthusiastic with a passion for sharing that PPK, and have had some truly enjoyable and inspiring experiences doing that, and I would like to continue doing so.
I have successfully tutored maths and science (physics, chemistry and some earth science) to high school students in years 10 and 11, and starting TAFE students and have a good understanding of the Australian curriculum as it is expected to be taught in Queensland secondary schools. I also have successful experience tutoring and mentoring adults to think (system, lateral, creative), and to convert their thinking into actions.
My understanding of these subjects is supported by 17 years studying in Australian Universities. I am a Process Control Engineer (the application of physics and chemistry, electronics, logics, digital technology, and communications to industrial and many other areas of process automation) and have achieved Fellow Grade in the Institute of Automation and Control Australia, and Associate Fellow Grade in the Institution of Engineers Australia. My tertiary education post Engineering includes business administration, workplace health and safety, environmental science and management, and a Master of Minerals Resources (Risk Management) Degree.
I have a Cert IV in training and have recently completed a “Teaching English as a Second Language” (TEFL) Certificate (with a 100% score for lesson planning) so I am experienced and competent to develop lesson plans if needed and can adapt or design a tutoring method according to the student’s ability and leaning needs.
I can tutor late primary school maths and science, junior and senior secondary maths and science, and lesson times would be typically 50 minutes, but negotiable. I also could conduct tuition for a small group (2 to 3) which would cost less without compromising on quality. I can also provide guidance for detailed drafting and/or proof-reading of project reports and essays.
I live at Buderim on the Sunshine Coast and am able to work independently at your place (preferably), at a convenient location like a library etc or at my place, and am available most days of the week. My previous work colleagues would say that I am fairly well organised, reliable, approachable and a good communicator, and have a unique passion for sharing my learning. About the lesson

My tutoring approach is to focus on helping students to close the gap between where they are in their learning and where they want or expect to be, supporting development of an understanding of a topic's "first principles". I will have achieved my goal when my students can think about a topic in terms of Marcus Aurelius's famous questions "Of each particular thing, ask what is it in itself? What is its nature?"
Such tutoring can be of 3 types - catch-up for a student who is falling behind, enhancement for a student who wants to excel for perhaps Uni options, or preparation for competition exams. I would begin with establishing from the student and their parents / guardians what their current stage of understanding of the subject matter and principles is, what learning problems if any they believe they have, and what they want to achieve. Subject to that the focus will be on guiding students to firstly develop or enhance both their basic understanding of the subject matter as well as the first principles underlying it, and then expanding that understanding to the application of their learning through simple tests and examples of many day to day and some not so frequent circumstances. This approach enables students to enhance their self-confidence and work towards the very best learning outcomes.
