About Serafina
My name is Serafina Rivera, and I recently completed my Master's degree in Earth Sciences and Geology at the University of New Hampshire. My research focuses on Icelandic volcanology, specifically understanding how changes in glacial loading and unloading influence magma systems and volcanic activity. I have conducted fieldwork in Minnesota, New Hampshire, Arctic Sweden, and Iceland, which has strengthened my passion for environmental science, climate research, and international collaboration.
Outside of research, I enjoy traveling, spending time outdoors, and sharing my enthusiasm for science with others. As a former Division I student-athlete and teaching assistant at UNH, I value patience, teamwork, and creating supportive environments that help others learn and succeed

I would be an effective tutor because of my strong teaching experience, patience, and commitment to supporting students with diverse learning needs. During my time at the University of New Hampshire, I served as a teaching assistant for Earth Sciences and Geology courses, where I helped students understand scientific concepts, answered questions during labs and class activities, and provided one-on-one academic support. These experiences strengthened my ability to explain material in different ways and adapt my teaching style to meet individual learning needs.
In addition to my academic experience, I have volunteered with Special Olympics for many years, serving in coaching and mentorship roles. Through this work, I have developed patience, empathy, and strong communication skills while working with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. My experiences have taught me the importance of creating an encouraging and inclusive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and building confidence in their abilities.
