About Raphael

I am a full-time tutor and an enthusiastic and level-headed educator who loves teaching both young people and adults, with over 9 years of extensive experience teaching Maths and Physics. I graduated with a 1st Class Masters degree in Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology from Lancaster University (No. 1 in the UK for Physics research) with outstanding skills in Maths and Physics. I have known since doing my own A-Levels that I could teach Maths to anybody, up to A-Level standard. Maths is simply the language of Physics and what university taught me, is that a firm foundation in Maths makes the world of Physics open up in a way it would not do otherwise. In my personal time, I like to sing, a lot. Throughout my time at university I was well known for my music as well as always studying. In fact, I think one of my greatest achievements was completing my degree with a good grade while keeping up the three choirs I was a member of (one of which I taught and led), two music groups, and a band, right up until the very end. My commitment to doing well, while still enjoying my time at university paid off and demonstrates that it can be done. This also leads to some of the additional experience I have teaching and leading - . Tutoring 11-18 year olds in Maths for a number of summer projects in the South London area over the past three years. . Informally tutoring since my A-Level days, with the result of several "A" grades in A-Level Maths modules. . Continually working with children and young adults up to the ages of 25 in my capacity as a peer-leader for the Tate Britain and Tate Modern art galleries. . Leading and teaching a successful University Choir for the majority of my University career. . Teaching since my days as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the Army Cadet Force. From my personal experience, I understand that everybody learns in unique ways. Discovering, and utilising the style in which a student learns is the key to inspiring them and making breakthroughs in whichever area they are seeking help. It is then that shocking and wonderful improvements can be made. You will be surprised at just how much can be achieved in a 60min or 90 minute lesson.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

    While working through my AS Levels in Maths and Physics, when the time came to look for a university and to pick a course, I could see nothing else even remotely interesting me other than 'Space'. An entire realm, representing a literal other-worldly experience. I had been fascinated by space since a young age, and Physics provided me the opportunity to learn much more. Then, it was during my second year of A Level that I first discovered my ability to teach Mathematical concepts to my friends, with the unforeseen consequence that they did better than me in the very exam topics I had helped them to conquer. This led me to seriously consider private tutoring as I was preparing to graduate from my Masters Degree in Astrophysics and Cosmology,...and the rest is history.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

    People often ask me which subject I prefer: Maths or Physics? My exact response is, "I find Maths easier to do but I find Physics more interesting." I love the simplicity I can bring to Maths problems for my students, such as my simple form-filling method for A Level Binomial Expansion. I love explaining the formation of the Universe and of the Solar System to my students; or the structure of the Atom; or the ridiculous feeling from the knowledge that we only burn fossil fuels in order to boil water in our pursuit of electricity. But if I am very honest, Hypothesis Testing is not my favourite thing.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

    Both my GCSE and A Level Maths teachers were fantastic! They were early inspirations, who made it so easy to enjoy the challenges that maths provides. I wonder if Miss Whitton or Mr Revie knew what they were starting and how they would influence the education of so many more students, well beyond the confines of their own classrooms, both in space and time.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    The qualities I have worked on developing in my own teaching, are the ones I hoped for and admired in teachers throughout my own youth: patience, perseverance, and an excellent knowledge of a subject mixed with the honesty that sometimes, we all make mistakes. Every student deserves to be championed in their desire to learn, even if there are times when they fight against the very idea of learning. A knowledgeable and patient tutor who does not give up on a student, and one that can demonstrate how to recover from a mistake or a failure, is priceless.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

    As many often do, a student recently asked me why Maths is important, and when will they ever use it. These days all I need to do is point to the interest rates and mortgage rates plastered all over the news, and I can rest my case. Maths is essential. Physics is fundamental.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

    I am upfront with students about the topics I do not like as much as others. They are few and far between, but they do exist, and I use them as a demonstration and an example of working through your challenges because you need to, even when it is not fun.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

    I sing! Throughout the day, at church, and during Open Mic nights. I have been in choirs, bands, and recorded music videos... Singing is my ultimate passion. I just happen to be really great at teaching too. {^_^}
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

    I travel to all my students' houses on crutches. That has got to count for something, right?
