When planning a lesson, I aim to first understand what a student already knows and is comfortable with and then to cover what a student may be struggling with. I'll usually ask a student if they have anything in particular they need help with and then cover those topics in ways which complement their prior learning in those areas. Sometimes all someone needs to wrap their head around something is a different explanation of the topic.
