About James

I have been a secondary school maths teacher for 30 years. Am now semi-retired. During all those years I got good exam results and got to the top of the pay spine because of this. Was also department deputy in 3 schools. I am patient and friendly and believe that giving the pupil a 'can do' attitude is just as important as explaining maths, though not a substitute for it.
I currently teach at a school in Worthing but am available on weekday evenings and weekend mornings. I can do this remotely (ie Google classroom) but would prefer the pupil's own home in the presence of an adult.

About the lesson

The first thing to do is find out where the pupil is in relation to his/her understanding. From then on tailor lessons to that individual, bringing in further challenges gradually. In an hour's lesson, typically, the first 10 minutes is assessment for learning, then 40 minutes development and exercise and finally 10 minutes review. Where possible, lessons will be sequenced so that one topic leads to another.
