About Derek
Hi, I'm Derek — and I know what it feels like to sit where you're sitting. I've spent over 26 years working in some of the most challenging and fast-paced engineering environments in the world, but some of the most rewarding moments of my career came when I stepped into the classroom. As an Engineering Lecturer at West College Scotland, I discovered a real passion for helping students and apprentices unlock their potential — not just passing exams, but genuinely understanding the subject and feeling confident in their abilities. Over five years, I worked with learners at every level, from those just starting out and finding their feet, to apprentices from industry looking to sharpen their skills and gain recognised qualifications. I have a talent for taking complex, intimidating topics and breaking them down into something that makes sense — and more importantly, something that sticks. I hold an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering and an Honours degree in Engineering Management, so I know the academic demands inside out too. Whether you're struggling to keep up, aiming for top marks, or simply want to build real confidence in STEM and Engineering subjects — I'd love to help you get there. Learning should feel like progress, not pressure, and that's exactly the experience I aim to create in every session.
