About Rezwan

The key to becoming a physician is to find a balance between upholding compassion for the patient and analysing the patient as a physiological set of systems. My attraction towards medicine is because of the passion, dedication and determination one is required to exalt in a complex and ever changing field. My enthusiasm flourished significantly after I spent four weeks shadowing a doctor performing medical checks and a myriad of challenging minor surgeries. This experience helped me develop an insight into the profession and instilled a profound appreciation of the fragility and complexity of the human body.
To further reinforce my aspiration of entering the medical field I arranged a vast array of work experience, GP surgery and abroad. While working at the Crossby House surgery I had the opportunity to shadow and consult the staff regarding a career in medicine. I learnt various procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, electrocardiography and wound dressing and most importantly how they premeditate and contribution to the build up of teamwork. During my work experience in Pakistan at City Hospital, I had an opportunity to scrutinize medicine from a foreign point of view and to enhanced my knowledge and provided further insight into medicine. While spending time in a third world hospital I observed the consistency of similar conditions: people suffering from skin diseases, malaria, intestinal diseases and tuberculosis was relatively high. I worked in the post-operate care department where my duties included helping patients with washing, eating, exercising, wound dressing.
I have personally experienced the terror of respiratory disease during my time in Hong Kong when a dramatic outbreak of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) appeared in Asia. I saw a close family friend lying on the hospital bed and I felt extremely powerless to alleviate his suffering. This tragic event was the root of my inspiration and emphasised to me the importance of the medical profession. Other than work experience in the medical field, I have also taken part in numerous charity events contributing to the flood victims in Pakistan, Thailand and Japan.
Besides my fascination with medicine, I have strong interest in sports and scientific articles in magazines and newspapers. I have participated in several competitions for cricket, football and hockey. I played hockey for KCC hockey club, having captained my team lead to numerous victories and achieving several medals and man of the match trophies. I played football for the school football team and cricket for the Farnham royal cricket club: this has been beneficial to develop good communication skills and enhancing my teamwork abilities.
While at secondary school, I participated in the Aim Higher program. This program involved a three day visit to Reading University to explore the life of university students and improve team working abilities. Throughout the program we participated in various activities that required companionship and commitment which allowed me to contribute my ideas and imagination. My oratorical skills contributed highly towards my presentation at the end of the program in front of 100 people.
In addition I started an after school chemistry club which provided help with homework, revision and coursework difficulties and aided many students to enhance their interests in the physical science.
I am very aware of the fact that medical students are faced with new challenges each and everyday. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will”. I hope to overcome any hurdles that stand in my path, as dedication and determination are the keystone in the medical profession.
