About Hugh
My professional experience includes performing and recording rock, funk/soul, jazz and improvised music, and performing interstate at various music festivals. I have also completed musical courses in Italy and New York. I'm currently gigging around town with soul/funk band The Mamas and with neo-soul artist Emma Volard.
I studied Jazz Performance (Double Bass) at Monash University, and have studied with some of Australia’s greatest musicians, including Tony Gould, Robert Burke, Simon Starr, Tamara Murphy, Jordan Murray, Paul Williamson, Frank di Sario and Tony Floyd.
I've taught people of all ages, from 6 years old to 40+ years old, across three instruments - piano, bass and guitar. I love it!

My aim is to help you develop a joyful and rewarding relationship with the bass! I love helping people get started with creating their own basslines, improvising, and understanding music theory.
In the early stages, we'll get into some basic technique, scales, chords and learning fun basslines. As we progress, we can investigate more specific areas or branch out into improvising, learning basic piano, learning by ear, playing with a band...anything!
I remember having my own lessons and often forgetting what we covered, so I love creating short videos or documents for my students so they can revisit anything they like.
