About Mark

Hi, I'm Mark.

Here is my website: markwangstudio.com

I'm a visual artist and educator based in Toronto. I recently completed my MFA in Photography at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and hold a BFA from Toronto Metropolitan University. Over the past two years, I've taught photography at the university level, working with students ranging from complete beginners to advanced artists preparing for exhibitions.

My teaching philosophy centers on helping students discover their own creative voice and develop a distinct visual language. I believe growth happens through consistent practice and thoughtful feedback—not quick fixes or trending techniques. We start with your interests, your perspective, and your goals, then build the technical foundation to realize your vision.

I specialize in areas that require personalized guidance beyond what online tutorials can offer:
- Portfolio development and curation
- Film photography and darkroom techniques
- Alternative processes including cyanotype and experimental printing
- Conceptual development and project planning
- Critical feedback on your work

Whether you're preparing a portfolio for art school applications, exploring analog processes, or developing a personal project, I can help you move forward with clarity and intention.

About the lesson

I specialize in personalized coaching that goes beyond YouTube tutorials:

PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT
- Curating and sequencing your strongest work
- Preparing applications for art schools (OCAD, Sheridan, RISD, etc.)
- Finding and developing your unique creative voice
- Professional portfolio reviews with actionable feedback

📷 ANALOG & ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES
- Film photography and darkroom techniques
- Cyanotype, pinhole cameras, and experimental processes
- Creating digital negatives for alternative printing, and creating custom curves for specific chemicals
- Hands-on guidance (can't learn this from videos!)

📷 PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
- Turning ideas into finished bodies of work
- Conceptual development and visual storytelling
- Regular feedback and accountability
- Exhibition preparation

TECHNICAL SKILLS IN CONTEXT
- Editing YOUR images together (not generic tutorials)
- Print proofing and color management for your work
- Troubleshooting your specific camera/software issues
- Workflow optimization based on your goals
- Retouching images before sending to print

My approach is hands-on and personalized - we work on YOUR photos, YOUR
goals, YOUR challenges. Perfect for students who've hit a plateau with
online tutorials and need expert guidance on their specific work.
