About Joe
I have a Bachelor's of Music in Composition from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and am currently pursuing my Master's at Illinois State University where I am employed as a teaching assistant in music theory as well as a tutor for music theory and aural skills. I was recently nominated for an Outstanding University Graduate Student Teacher Award for my work the past school year.

For music theory my teaching methods include:
Diverse explanations: I present topics in multiple ways to ensure understanding
Adaptive learning: I tailor my teaching style to suit each student's preferences
Syllabus-based or custom curriculum: I can work with existing course materials or create a personalized learning plan
My typical lesson plan would include some or all of the following:
I would review previous concepts discussed
Introduce new material/listen to student's problems with new material in classes
Discuss and work through problems with exercises
Be open to any questions about the topic or other related topics
Assign new work to reinforce the topics covered.
I believe that my specialty lies in finding unique, creative ways to explain music theory concepts. I excel at breaking down complex ideas into digestible parts, making difficult topics easier to understand. My ability to break music theory down into various learning styles ensures that every student can grasp and apply the material effectively.
I offer tutoring for a wide range of students, including:
High school students preparing for AP Music Theory exams
Individuals preparing for CLEP tests
College students in Music Theory 101, 102, 201, 202, or equivalent courses
Anyone interested in learning music theory, from beginners to advanced students
My expertise covers introductory topics through to second-year college-level theory, but I am also open to discussing more advanced topics.
I am a composer and can also give lessons on basic compositional techniques and orchestration techniques. These lessons would be more freeform as I would give feedback and critique on the student's works.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Joe is both a passionate musician and skilled composer - but he’s a great teacher because he understands what it’s like to struggle with the concepts too. He is excitable but very patient with his students, and he explains things in a detailed but entertaining manner. I HIGHLY recommend learning alongside him in any capacity! He will challenge you without it feeling like a challenge - he just wants to make great art with others and give people the tools to continue to do so.
I've known Joe for years, and I will say, despite being around many musically talented people on a regular basis, I don't know many with as complete an understanding of music as Joe. He is quick on his feet to come up with solutions, and is good at tackling problems from a variety of different perspectives. Joe is also an efficient communicator, and is both honest and reliable
Joe is a fantastic teacher—he's great at breaking complicated concepts in ways that I can understand. He's also incredibly passionate about music theory! I can't recommend Joe enough!
