About Melissa

I’m Dr. Melissa Mills, a professional music educator, conductor, and voice teacher with a Ph.D. in Choral Music Education from Michigan State University and 30 years of teaching experience. I previously served on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Music and have taught musicians from beginning students through the university level and advanced adult performers.

My career has included private voice instruction, university teaching, choral conducting, composition and arranging, and directing both youth and adult choirs. I currently direct Utah Youth Singers and Bel Canto Women’s Chorus and work regularly with singers of many ages and levels.

What I love most about teaching is figuring out what helps an individual student succeed. I bring substantial training and experience to the studio, but lessons are warm, encouraging, and down-to-earth. You never need to worry about impressing me before you walk through the door—that’s not what lessons are for.

I love helping singers discover abilities they didn’t know they had, develop confidence, and experience the joy that comes from becoming a stronger, more independent musician.

About the lesson

Voice lessons should be a place where you can discover what your voice is capable of.

I work with each singer as an individual. I listen carefully to how you sing, how you learn, and what you want to accomplish, then design instruction around your voice. Lessons may include healthy vocal technique, breath coordination, resonance and registration, repertoire, sight-reading, ear training, musicianship, interpretation, performance confidence, and audition preparation.

I particularly love teaching adult singers—including adults returning to singing after many years, lifelong choral singers who have never had individual voice instruction, and adults who have simply always wanted to learn. I also work with singers preparing for auditions or pursuing goals such as the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. You do not need an impressive résumé to study with me. We start where you are.

I also love working with teenagers, including shy, hesitant, and neurodivergent singers. Singing can feel very personal, and I want lessons to be a place where students can experiment, make mistakes, develop their skills, and gain genuine confidence. I adapt my teaching to the way each student learns and processes information rather than expecting every student to learn the same way.

For families using educational scholarships, I am an approved provider for both Utah Fits All and the Carson Smith Opportunity Scholarship Program, and scholarship funds may be used for eligible lessons.

I hold a Ph.D. in Choral Music Education from Michigan State University and have 30 years of teaching experience, from children and teens through university students and advanced adult musicians. I previously served on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Music, and my professional work has included voice and music instruction, university teaching, choral conducting, composition and arranging, and directing youth and adult choirs.

That breadth of experience shapes my teaching. I don't simply help students learn songs. I teach them how to listen, how to practice, how music works, and how to solve problems independently—so they become more confident singers and stronger musicians.
