About Michael
I’m a lifelong musician with more than 20 years of experience as a performer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist. My background includes classical piano training, jazz piano and saxophone, composition, ensemble leadership, and more than a decade of arranging music for church ensembles.
That broad experience gives me a practical understanding of music theory from several different perspectives—not only as an academic subject, but as something used in performance, composition, arranging, and collaboration. I enjoy helping students make connections between the concepts they are learning and the music they actually hear and play.
I aim to be patient, clear, and adaptable in my teaching. Whether a student is encountering music theory for the first time or wants to strengthen an existing foundation, my goal is to help them understand the material well enough to use it confidently and independently.

I teach music theory by connecting concepts to actual music rather than treating theory as a list of rules to memorize. My background spans classical and jazz performance, composition, arranging, ensemble leadership, and multiple instruments, so I can explain the same idea from several different musical perspectives.
Lessons are tailored to the student’s goals and may include notation, scales, intervals, chords, harmony, rhythm, Roman-numeral analysis, ear training, composition, and arranging. A typical lesson combines explanation with practical examples, guided exercises, and application at the keyboard or on the student’s instrument when helpful.
