About Diane

I am a native French teacher from Le Mans, France, and I have been living in London and Essex for the past 10 years.
I regularly return to France — I can’t stay away too long without a croissant!

I studied Humanities in intensive preparatory courses (Hypokhâgne and Khâgne), focusing on Latin, Greek, Philosophy, History, Literature, and English. My passion for languages and culture led me to share my love of French with others. In 2014, I graduated from La Sorbonne with a BA in English and French as a Foreign Language (FLE), and the following year I completed an MA in Modern Foreign Languages (French, English, and Spanish) at Lille University.

As a mum of three little boys, I also experience language learning first-hand at home. Speaking French with them every day has reminded me that teaching is as much about kindness and fun as it is about knowledge. This is exactly the approach I bring to my lessons: I make sure my students enjoy themselves while learning, so progress feels natural and motivating :)

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

Yes, I am a native French speaker, I grew up in France. My grandmother was an English lady though which means I have also enjoyed speaking English at home and I studied both languages at university.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I would have to say Victor Hugo. I love his passion and how he was able to convey his own tragic experiences through his writing.
I also admire his energy and his staunch political views, even while in exile.
I think he made the most beautiful french pieces on death, mourning, love, history and joy. Who doesn't know The French novel "Les Misérables" and the compassion that comes out of it to the poor?
I believe he is the most emblematic character to represent French language.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I think that "pot pourri" is a good one. It refers to something that is meant to make a place smell good. But when hearing it for the first time, the adjective doesn't really make you want to have it at home! The history of the language explains it, though, as "pourri" used to mean "overcooked".
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Well first of all, none can deny how English language has taken over the world and I believe it is important that people actually speak French. If you speak French, you make sure that you understand the French pieces of arts and that you are able to share it with others.
French is also used in every part of the world so it is also a very useful tool!
At last but not least, it used to be the language of diplomacy and international relations, and still is in some institutions.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

People can be put off by the conjugation and grammar of this language. The phonetics can be tricky at times too.
This language is difficult for natives themselves, but I believe that it is also what makes it valuable and special.
Like any other subject, being regular and rigorous is key. Lessons need to be enjoyable too !
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

During my teenage years at school I learnt ancient Latin and Greek and I think it explains why I love french culture and history. It was a lot of rules to learn by heart, but it was worth it!
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I have never felt more French since I lived in England! Everyday, I speak french to my English children, and I think they will be my students forever too!
I have never felt more French since I lived in England! I speak French to my children everyday and they definitely help me in being a better French teacher : patience, love, creativity, enthusiasm are important when teaching French.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I put a lot of effort in tailoring my lessons to the students : their needs, their interests and their goals. I also want them to be at ease and to have a good time. I think these values are part of a good Superprof in language!
