About Caroline
Academic & Professional Expertise
I was born and raised in Guangzhou (near HK), one of the major Cantonese-speaking cities in China. I attended the top-tier schools where they taught in 100% Mandarin and aced my Chinese exams almost every time among a class of 50.
After that I went to Michigan State University, majoring in Media & Information. Studied abroad in London for a summer with Film Studies minor.
My English proficiency was forged through rigorous academic training and allowed me to work at local TV station PBS, WKAR as the only international student.
After college, I was accepted to University of Southern California - MFA School of Cinematic Arts (ranked #1 globally) and continue pursuing film.
While living in Los Angeles, I specialize in U.S.–China co-productions across film, television, short dramas, as well as cross-cultural film festivals. Many projects are funded by Chinese investors who arrive with Mandarin scripts and need a bilingual local producer to make them work on the ground. As a producer and cultural bridge, I localize Chinese scripts into performable English versions for American cast and crew, sometimes rewriting scenes myself so the story lands naturally in English while honoring the original intent.
I facilitate high-stakes meetings by translating complex creative notes between Chinese executives and American directors, writers, actors, and technical teams, and I handle on-set coordination across casting, locations, lighting, and camera. This constant, high-stakes mediation across languages and production cultures has pushed my Mandarin, Cantonese, and English to a fully native, professional level.
This unique blend of native Chinese roots and top-tier US media expertise ensures I can teach you with professional precision and cultural depth.
Travel & Personal Interests
Beyond work, I’m a solo backpacker who has traveled across Europe (Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, France, UK, Budapest, Amsterdam), Turkey, Australia, Puerto Rico, and Asia. If I travel to a place where no one can speak English, I’ll ‘force’ myself to learn some survival phrases right away!
I’ve also been singing, dancing, and playing the piano since age 5.
To share a little secret with you, I found it easier to pick up survival phrases through film and song lyrics!
I believe rhythm and culture are key to language learning, and I can’t wait to share these methods with you!

Mandarin
As a non-native English speaker who has studied and lived in the US for years, I truly understand the challenges of learning a new language — from grammar struggles and pronunciation hurdles to culture shock and the frustration of not being able to express yourself. I’ve been there, and I’m here to help make your Chinese-learning (Mandarin/Cantonese) journey smoother and more enjoyable.
My lessons are relaxed, flexible, and completely tailored to what you need. Here’s what we can do together:
1. Travel & Daily Survival (Mandarin/Cantonese):
If you’re planning a trip to China or just want to be prepared, we can practice essential everyday scenarios such as ordering food at restaurants and bubble tea shops, calling a cab, asking for directions and local recommendations, shopping and bargaining at markets, checking into hotels, buying high-speed train or metro tickets, making new friends with locals and handling basic emergencies etc. You name it!
2. Topic-Based Conversations (Mandarin/Cantonese):
If you want to go beyond daily basics and dive into more meaningful discussions, we can talk about movies and TV shows, sports, music, travel experiences, Chinese culture and traditions or any topic you’re passionate about!
3. Casual Chat & Conversation (Mandarin/Cantonese):
If you just want to talk about your day, share what’s on your mind, or simply chit-chat in a natural way, that’s perfectly fine too. Sometimes the best way to improve is just to keep talking without any pressure!
If you’re just starting out and don’t know a single word of Mandarin/Cantonese yet, don’t worry at all – I can gently walk you through everything in English, so you can truly understand every word, every sentence and the meaning behind it. You’ll be surprised how quickly you can get started and feel comfortable to say it out loud.
And if you’ve already learned some Mandarin/Cantonese, we can go much deeper—exploring more real-life conversations and things you haven’t had the chance to practice before.
This isn’t a stiff lesson. It’s a warm, friendly, judgment-free space where we can talk, laugh, have fun and grow together. I’ll meet you where you are and help you get to where you want to be.
I genuinely can’t wait to meet you and hear your story!
Cheers!
