About Chen

I'm a native Mandarin speaker, writer and theatre-maker with over 10 years of experience living and studying internationally.

Having spent much of my adult life moving between Chinese- and English-speaking environments, I'm especially interested in what gets lost between languages: the expressions that don't quite translate, the cultural assumptions hidden inside everyday words, and the different ways we communicate and think.

I studied Philosophy and English, including a year at the University of Oxford, and have been teaching Mandarin for over two years to learners at different levels.

As a teacher, I'm warm, curious and adaptable. I don't believe everyone should learn a language in the same way. Some students learn best through conversation, some need structure, some love characters and etymology, and others need to understand *why* Chinese works the way it does before it sticks.

So I build my lessons around you — your interests, your goals and the way you learn.

About the lesson

My Mandarin lessons combine structured learning with real conversation, culture and play.

Rather than simply memorising vocabulary lists, we'll explore how Chinese actually works: how a phrase changes depending on context, why certain expressions sound natural while others don't, how characters carry meaning, and how people really speak to one another.

Depending on your level and goals, lessons can include:

• conversational Mandarin and speaking confidence
• pronunciation and tones
• Chinese characters, vocabulary and grammar
• listening and reading
• HSK preparation and textbook-based study
• Chinese culture, expressions and the stories behind the language
• creative exercises using images, situations, stories, films or topics you're genuinely interested in

For beginners, I can give you a clear structure and help you build a strong foundation without making Chinese feel intimidating.

For intermediate and advanced learners, we can work towards sounding more natural, expressing complex ideas and moving beyond "textbook Chinese."

I also teach HSK and am happy to work with a textbook when structure is useful — but the textbook doesn't have to be the whole lesson.

Lessons are personalised to each student and can be 30 or 60 minutes.
