About Karla

Hi! I'm Karla, a native Spanish speaker with a passion for language, culture, and helping others build confidence in speaking Spanish.

I was born in New York and raised in a bilingual Dominican-American household, where Spanish was a central part of everyday life. Eleven years ago, I moved to the UK to study at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with a degree in English Literature and History of Art. I later completed a Master's in Contemporary Art Theory at Goldsmiths, University of London, graduating with a Distinction.

Over the past five years, I've worked in corporate and consumer communications, where clear communication, storytelling, and building strong relationships are at the heart of what I do. These skills naturally translate into my tutoring style—I enjoy creating lessons that are engaging, well-structured, and tailored to each student's individual goals.

Whether you're learning Spanish for travel, work, school, or simply for the joy of speaking another language, I aim to create a relaxed, encouraging environment where you feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing confidence with every lesson.

As someone who has spent much of my life navigating two languages and cultures, I understand both the challenges and the rewards of learning a language. My goal is not just to teach vocabulary and grammar, but to help you communicate naturally and enjoy the process along the way.

About the lesson

My teaching approach

I believe the best way to learn a language is by using it from day one. My lessons are conversational, supportive, and tailored to each student's goals - whether you're preparing for a trip, improving your speaking confidence, studying for exams, or learning Spanish for work.

I like to balance practical conversation with grammar and vocabulary, using real-life situations, articles, videos, and cultural examples to make lessons engaging and relevant. I'll adapt the pace to suit your learning style, ensuring you feel challenged but never overwhelmed.

Lesson length

Lessons are typically 60 minutes, although I'm happy to offer 30-minute sessions for students looking for more frequent practice or a quick conversation class.

My experience

I'm a native Spanish speaker, born and raised speaking Spanish, and I'm fluent in English. Having lived and worked in both English- and Spanish-speaking environments, I understand the challenges of learning a second language and can explain concepts clearly from both perspectives.

While I'm relatively new to tutoring professionally, I've spent years helping friends, colleagues, and family improve their Spanish informally. I'm patient, encouraging, and committed to creating a relaxed environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions.
