About Simon

I'm a retired English teacher seeking tutoring work, specifically with learners interested in English language development - adults, children, native and non-native speakers. I have the Cambridge CELTA, a BA (Hons) in English and a BA (Hons) in Philosophy, which taught me much about language in general, a passion I still have.

In my life as an English teacher, I worked at Central TAFE with students from SEA and Europe - teens to adults - and at the Catholic Migrant Centre with migrants and refugees - grownups to the elderly. I would love to work with native speakers and children, too.

At TAFE, I began by teaching English as a second language for several years before transitioning to designing and serving as head teacher for an international business English (IBE) course. During that time, I designed an English course for unemployed individuals (NorthSyde SkillShare). Most recently, I designed a lesson program for the PTE test to support migration, study, and work.

My IBE classes at TAFE were recognized in overseas student networks. Many Korean clients chose the school specifically for my classes. I feel this reflects my teaching style, dedication, and professionalism.

About the lesson

In addition to studying English literature, I've learned much about language from philosophy. My interest in English grammar, which covers all sentence types and more, ties into this background. As in previous classes, this knowledge will help me answer your questions. I can simplify and explain the complexities of usage.

In a sense, language shapes our world, and we must understand the language of our social environment. I love English. I will teach it with understanding and thoroughness. I will explain issues and guide you patiently, as others have done for me in my academic studies. You can progress at your own pace.

Learning should be interesting and enjoyable. I can teach grammar and vocabulary step by step, but most students want faster results from every lesson, which makes sense. I adjust my lessons to each student's needs because language instruction should be practical and needs-based. In our first chat, we will discuss your challenges and goals. I'll assess your language level and provide feedback. Then, I'll ask you to write about an issue before the next lesson and analyze your writing to identify your main needs. These needs will guide us into English grammar and, as we progress, let us expand our focus and cover more topics over time.

I can dedicate part of each lesson to conversation, allowing immediate speaking practice and reinforcing lesson points. For students who prefer casual conversation with corrections, I can focus lessons on dialogue and, if desired, provide email feedback summarizing key grammar and vocabulary for further review at home.

I met him at Central TAFE (as it was called then) in Perth City where we were both part of the English language teaching team in the ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) Department. Simon designed the IBE (International Business English) Course and I co-taught with him that very specific course. Soon our “IBE” gained an excellent reputation with students from all over the world enrolling at TAFE to study just the IBE. The reputation was due to the design and delivery of this course. As colleagues teaching the same course, we often had meetings to discuss delivery and individual students, their progress, achievements and assessments. Simon struck me as a most professional and compassionate teacher, independent, lateral thinker, with a depth of knowledge not usually found amongst colleagues, respecting students and team members. Our friendship continued to this day even after Simon quit TAFE. I can only recommend him in the highest degree.
