About Amrit

I am a Criminology tutor with 9 years of tutoring experience across Criminology, Law, Sociology and Politics, alongside previous experience in early-years Maths, English and Science tutoring.

Having ADHD myself, alongside traits associated with autism, dyspraxia, dyslexia and dyscalculia, I understand that highly intelligent and capable students do not always thrive within conventional learning methods. I remained undiagnosed throughout my own academic journey, yet achieved strong academic results by developing personalised revision systems, learning techniques and structure-based strategies that worked specifically for the way my brain processes information. Many of these approaches now form part of the methods my own students consistently praise and benefit from.

I graduated with a First Class Law with Sociology LLB, which included the study of Criminology, and achieved the highest mark in my cohort for one of my Criminology modules, receiving a double first. I later completed a Master’s in Law with a Social Justice specialism at UCL, where I focused heavily on socio-legal research and the relationship between law, society, inequality and justice.

I have also worked as a co-curricular Criminology teacher at a private school, giving me direct experience of teaching Criminology in an educational setting.

Alongside my academic background, I have completed the Bar Course at ICCA, the professional training course for aspiring barristers, funded by two highly competitive scholarships. My legal training gives me an additional practical perspective on areas of Criminology relating to criminal law, criminal justice, policing, courts, sentencing and the wider justice system.

I also have experience volunteering in schools to deliver lessons on law, politics and social rights, previously ran a Sixth Form Law Society independently, and currently conduct socio-legal research as Head of Research for a legal education charity.

About the lesson

My Criminology lessons are highly adaptable and tailored to the individual student. I focus particularly on exam technique, assessment criteria, application, evaluation, confidence building and helping students understand exactly what is required to reach the higher mark bands.

A major focus of my teaching is breaking down assessment criteria into clear and manageable steps. Criminology students can often know the content but still lose marks because they are unsure how much detail is needed, how to apply their knowledge, or how to develop their analysis and evaluation.

A typical lesson may begin with the student recalling a topic or attempting an exam question from memory. I then use structured prompts, questions and clues to identify gaps in knowledge and help them develop their answer before providing targeted feedback.

Depending on the student's needs, we may then build a stronger response together, work through a model answer, create an exam plan or focus on a particular assessment criterion that needs improvement.

For WJEC Criminology in particular, I place strong emphasis on helping students understand the difference between simply describing material and actually meeting the specific command word and assessment criteria, including where explanation, application or evaluation is required.

I also help students connect Criminology to the real operation of the criminal justice system. My background in Law, socio-legal research and barrister training allows me to provide wider context where useful, while still keeping lessons focused on what the specification and assessment require.

I have worked with many neurodivergent students, including students with ADHD, autism and dyslexia. My teaching therefore places a strong emphasis on clarity, structure and reducing overwhelm, alongside personalised revision, organisation and active-recall strategies where appropriate.

Ultimately, my aim is to help students not only learn Criminology content, but understand how to apply it, evaluate it and turn it into high-mark answers.
