About Ruby
I am about to graduate from my Master of Arts degree at the Royal Academy of Music in London with distinction and a scholarship; I graduated my Bachelor of Music degree at RAM with first-class honours in 2024, and I was awarded the Irene Burcher Prize for the highest undergraduate woodwind final recital mark. I am quickly establishing myself as a versatile soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player.
I have a very active orchestral profile, and have performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall, the Manchester Camerata, the Kensington Symphony Orchestra (of which I am Principal Piccolo), and the contemporary-focused Riot Ensemble. I am also a freelance musician for the Royal Ballet and Opera, and have additionally worked side-by-side with the Philharmonia. During my studies, I have had the opportunity to work with established conductors on many occasions in the Academy Symphony Orchestra as both Principal Flute and Principal Piccolo, including Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner, Ryan Wigglesworth, and John Wilson. I enjoy performing regularly with my two chamber groups, Duo Tânwen (flute & harp) and Silver Pipework (flute & organ), and in my ensembles have notably performed for HM The Queen and HRH The Princess Royal.
As a soloist during my studies at RAM, I have performed in masterclasses for world-class flutists such as Emmanuel Pahud, Emily Beynon, Silvia Careddu, and Gareth Davies; on my travels, to many other high-profile flautists in Spain, The Netherlands, Germany, the USA, and Hungary, who have given me a wealth of knowledge to apply to my playing on both the flute and piccolo. I have achieved success in several competitions and was the Over-19s Woodwind Winner at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 2023, and the British Flute Society’s Young Performer of 2018.
Outside of performing, I am highly passionate about music education; in 2024, I travelled to Greece to work with children in refugee and migrant camps as part of the Wind-Up Penguin Theatre Company, and have also returned to the National Youth Orchestra as an assistant tutor after spending three years as a member in my teenage years.
