About Bethan
Hi there!
I'm Bethan, an experienced tutor with over 7 years of teaching experience.
I've recently graduated from the University of Cambridge, where I studied Biological Sciences (which included Cell Biology, Evolution, Embryo Development, Chemistry, Maths, History and Philosophy of Science, Behaviour, and Ecology). What I love about maths and sciences is how they explain the things we see in the world, and how they can be enjoyable puzzle-solving challenges.
I've taught Maths, Biology, Chemisty, and Physics at A level and GCSE, with my students achieving top grades. I've also taught Maths, English, Sciences, History, Music, RE, and Geography at KS2 and KS3. I have worked with students looking to stretch for the top marks, as well as students looking for a help with subjects they are struggling with.
I'm also experienced with university applications and interviews - having been through them myself and successfully coached many others.
My tutoring track record combined with my natural enthusiasm for my subjects is what helps my students achieve their desired results. My tutoring approach involves guiding each student through the course content in the way that will best help them learn and prepare for exams.
At university, I played hockey, netball, and lacrosse. I was also a science journalist for the student newspaper, sports rep for my student union, and Publicity Officer for the Biological Society.
Since graduating, I have been undertaking internships in research labs while applying for PhDs.
My approach to tutoring is centred around each student.
Rather than just providing information, I focus on helping the student build on their existing knowledge to confidently grasp the whole subject. I guide students through the course to gain a better understanding. There's no easy fix to learning a subject, so I bring this together with strategies for revising beyond the lessons. As much as I love learning for the enjoyment of it, I understand that the end goal is the exams. So, I emphasise exam technique alongside the course content.
For each student, I will first get to know their aims, to make a plan. A typical lesson will involve interactive teaching and revising of a topic, then putting this into action with guided practice exam questions. I tend to sketch pictures to explain the concepts, as this is really useful for understanding. I often revisit topics we've previously covered to boost understanding and memory.
I can also suggest revision material to look at and questions to practise in students’ own time, which we can discuss in the next lesson - I have extensive experience various online resources. I will always discuss how the student feels they are progressing to see if we need to make any changes.
My whole-spectrum approach suits both students who need a boost with a topic they are struggling with, and students who are looking to be stretched to reach the highest marks. It's also very flexible, and can be adapted to suit each student's needs.
