About Molly

Molly Sellors is a Glasgow-based oboist and historical oboist whose career spans performance, directing, producing, and education. She studied at The Purcell School and the Royal College of Music Junior Department under James Turnbull, supported by the Wolfson Foundation, before undertaking a Bachelor’s degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland as an ABRSM Scholar, training with Peter Dykes, Amy Turner, and Henry Clay, graduating in 2025. During this time, she also studied historical oboe privately with Alexandra Bellamy and on exchange at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague with Frank de Bruine. As a performer, Molly is an oboist with Paraorchestra, performing with them in a range of projects including an appearance at the BBC Proms in The Virtuous Circle. On historical oboe, she has undertaken side-by-side concerts with the Orchestra of the 18th Century and with the Suffolk Villages Festival Wind Soloists, and is a member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment’s Ann and Peter Law Experience Scheme (2026–27). As an educator, Molly has worked alongside composer Sir James MacMillan on education projects for the Cumnock Tryst, and is a Trainee at Soundplay Projects, supporting inclusive and accessible music-making. She was also a Dynamo Scholar with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra from May–September 2025, working within External Relations. Molly is the director of Hoolan Ensemble, an ensemble dedicated to new music and to bringing music to wider audiences. Performing in unconventional settings, the ensemble has presented work in spaces including IKEA and toured cinemas across the UK. Hoolan Ensemble were winners of the 2024 Write Start Award, and their silent film Foreign Body (2024, dir. Sára Ní Eithir) — for which Molly also served as executive producer — was double nominated for Best UK Short at the Raindance Film Festival 2025.

My lessons are flexible, supportive, and tailored to the individual. As a disabled musician, I know from personal experience that everyone learns differently, and that a “one-size-fits-all” approach simply doesn’t work. I take the time to understand how each student learns best and adapt my teaching style to suit them. I aim to create a relaxed, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and exploring their musical interests. Lessons are interactive and practical, with clear explanations and plenty of opportunity to play, experiment, and reflect. Building confidence is just as important to me as building technical skill. I also focus on helping students learn how to practise and develop on their own, not just what to do in lessons. As a largely self-taught historical oboist, I’ve had to find effective ways of improving independently, and I share these tools and strategies with my students so they can continue making progress between lessons and beyond. Lessons are usually one hour long, which allows time for focused learning and feedback. For younger children, I recommend 45-minute lessons, as this better suits their concentration levels. I teach all ages and all levels, from complete beginners to advanced players. I also regularly work with children in SEND settings, and I’m confident adapting lessons to support a wide range of needs. My aim is always to make lessons accessible, enjoyable, and rewarding for every student. Above all, I want lessons to be positive, motivating, and empowering — helping each student grow as a musician and enjoy their learning journey.
