About Jayama

I received my Ph.D. from Monash University in 2015 under the supervision of Prof. Ian M. Wanless and Prof. Daniel Horsley on the title of Autoparatopism of Latin squares.
Also, I have completed my M. Phil, M.Sc., and B.Sc. (Special) Degrees in Mathematics. Moreover, I have teaching experience in various Mathematical subjects as a Tutor at Melbourne University (Semester I in 2016), Monash University (2012 – 2014), and as a Senior Lecturer and lecturer at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Now I am working as a Sessional Tutor at Monash University.

I have been teaching Mathematics to undergraduate and postgraduate students and supervising research works at the graduate level for nearly thirty (30) years in Sri Lanka and Australia. I have sound knowledge of students’ behavior. Patience, creativity, hard work, determination, and flexibility are the core skills that help towards the success of the teaching profession. My passion is assisting students to build self-confidence and empowering individuals to be self-reflective learners. With a good understanding of students’ different mathematical communication skills in solving problems, I provide opportunities to work in groups, raise queries of discussion, and find solutions with mutual brainstorming. By showing my commitment to students’ education, I hope to develop their active learning and make them leaders in their working environment.

About the lesson

I have nearly 30 years experience of teaching mathematics to undergraduate and graduate students and nearly 4 years as a sessional tutor at Monash University and Melbourne University, Australia. Now, I am working as a sessional tutor at Monash University. I have obtained a B.Sc. (Special), M.Sc., M. Phil, and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics.
When teaching Mathematics, I like to assess each student’s current understanding of the subject and tailor my approach accordingly. When assessing a student’s current level of understanding, I like to start by asking them some basic questions about the subject. This helps me to understand where they are in terms of their knowledge and gives me an idea of what topics we should focus on during our lessons. I understand that everyone learns differently, so my teaching approach is tailored to each student based on their needs and goals.
Since mathematics is a difficult subject for some students, my lesson plans usually include breaking down complex concepts into simple steps, providing relevant examples, and using visuals such as diagrams and pictures or other methods to help the students understand the material better. Additionally, I also use practice problems to assess the student’s progress and adjust my approach accordingly. Finally, I try to make learning fun and engaging through games and activities that keep the students motivated and excited about learning.
I also create a positive learning environment by being patient and encouraging throughout the process. That way, the student feels supported and knows that I am there to help them succeed.
I usually provide positive reinforcement when the students make progress, which helps to keep them motivated. Additionally, I check in with students regularly to gauge their understanding and make sure I am tailoring my approach to their individual needs. I evaluate a student’s progress by giving regular assessments, quizzes, and tests.
