About Tate
Hi! I’m Tate, an Ontario Certified Teacher with a Master of Teaching from OISE and a background in Kinesiology, Science, and Biology.
I’ve always been curious about how things work and have a real passion for Science. I love making connections, asking questions, and finding ways to make challenging concepts easier to understand. That curiosity is a big part of what led me to teaching in the first place.
I’ve had the opportunity to teach students with a wide range of abilities and learning needs, and Grade 9-12 Science and Biology are especially close to my heart. One of my favorite parts of teaching is seeing a student’s confidence grow when a concept that once seemed impossible finally starts to make sense.
I also believe that learning should feel encouraging, not intimidating. I want my students to feel comfortable taking their time, asking questions, making mistakes, and trying again. Sometimes a student doesn’t need to work harder; they just need someone to explain things in a way that makes sense to them and encourage them along the way.
I can help students keep up with their regular classwork, review challenging lessons and concepts, prepare for upcoming tests and exams, or simply feel more confident in the subject. Whether they are working toward a specific academic goal or simply trying to feel a little more comfortable with the material, I want them to leave each session feeling proud of their progress and ready for what comes next.

As an Ontario Certified Teacher, I take a personalized and student-centered approach to tutoring. I believe students learn best when they understand why something works rather than simply memorizing information. I adjust my approach based on each student’s strengths, challenges, learning needs, and confidence level.
My main area of focus is Grade 9-12 Science and Biology, where I can provide support with the Ontario curriculum, challenging concepts, test and exam preparation, assignments, labs, and study skills. I also work with students in Grades 1-8 in Math, Science and English, as well as students taking French.
I like to start by getting to know the student and identifying what they already understand and where they are struggling. From there, I break down challenging concepts into smaller, manageable steps and use clear explanations, real-world examples, visuals, practice questions, and guided activities to make the material easier to understand. For Science and Biology, I focus on helping students make connections between concepts rather than relying on memorization alone.
A typical tutoring session begins with a quick check-in or review of previous concepts, followed by a focused look at the areas where the student needs the most support. We work through examples together before giving the student opportunities to apply the concept independently. I finish by reviewing what we covered and identifying anything that should be practiced before the next session.
What sets me apart is that I bring the experience of a classroom teacher to one-on-one tutoring. I am familiar with the Ontario curriculum and understand that students learn in different ways. My goal is not just to help students improve a mark, but to help them build the understanding, confidence, and study strategies they need to become more independent learners.
Whether a student is struggling with a subject, needs help catching up, is preparing for an upcoming test or exam, or simply wants to strengthen their understanding, I tailor my support to meet them where they are and help them move forward.
