About Ivan

Hi, I'm Ivan! I recently graduated from Oxford with a First in German, and won the department prize for the best performance among German Sole students in my year. . During my year abroad I taught English full-time in a German secondary school, working with both complete beginners and advanced groups debating politics and literature. I've also worked one-to-one with students on Oxbridge applications, helping shape and refine their personal statements.
Whilst I studied a language, my main focus and passion throughout my degree was German literature. In school, interpretations of texts are often handed to you by the teacher, with little encouragement to form your own opinion. However, as a tutor, I'm not interested in simply giving you the answer. What matters most to me is guiding you towards your own interpretation, and giving you the tools to express it clearly and coherently. This is something I learnt from my own experience of the Oxford tutorial system, which encourages independence of thought whilst still offering guidance and support. It's this same balance I try to bring to my own tutoring.
I'm excited to help you both enjoy exploring literature in another language, and develop the essay-writing skills that are essential for academic success. I can't wait to meet you!

About the lesson

My lessons are built around getting students to do the thinking and talking, rather than listening to me. In German and English, I start by finding out what a student can already do, then set tasks just beyond that level. I use short, focused exercises, such as speaking prompts, close reading or timed writing, and give immediate feedback so that mistakes are corrected while they are fresh. For essay and application work, I mark a piece of writing together with the student, explaining why a change improves it so they learn to make those judgements themselves.

One hour is my standard lesson, which gives enough time to review the previous session's work, teach something new and set a short task for the week.

I taught English with the British Council in 2024-25 at a German grammar school, working with pupils aged 11 to 18. I taught whole classes of up to 30 and ran small-group sessions, so I am comfortable adapting my style to the size of the group and the needs of each student. I have also read and marked personal statements for students applying to Oxford and Cambridge. I graduated from Oxford in 2026 with a first in German.

My lessons are for students from GCSE to A-level in German and English, as well as those preparing Oxbridge applications, including personal statements and interviews.
