About Joseph

I have been tutoring for 4+ years working with a number of London's leading tutoring agencies as well as independently.

I offer in-person lessons to students across the Greater London area because, I found, that online lessons are not as effective as in-person for students in the 5-16 years old category which is the age group I specialise in.

I also do offer online lessons, however, my preference is to work with a student in-person.

My particular specialty is working with younger pupils (5-16 years old) and motivating them to become excited about Maths and Physics.

I achieve this by incorporating practical computer-building activities into my lessons. I bring all components and tools with me and teach my students how to assemble computers and electronics.

This makes my Maths and Physics lessons much more interactive and shows my students the practical applications of what we cover during lessons.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have had an interest in Maths, Physics, and electronics since I was 12 years old. I became a private tutor 4 years ago.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Maths, Physics, and electronics. My friends, students, and family always comment that I have a lot of patience and this patience allowed me to build a particular expertise in working with younger pupils. In particular, I specialise in teaching 5-13 year olds. This age bracket often also has attention span / motivation issues. I thrive on this challenge.

I deliver Maths and Physics with the help of practical computer-assembly lessons. Put simply, I bring computer parts and teach my pupils how to build computers themselves. This brings Maths and Physics lessons to life and makes students very motivated. So I love electronics and coding topics and all surrounding areas of Maths and Physics. While I have also taught A-Level and university level Physics and Maths, I do not enjoy teaching older students as much as I enjoy teaching the younger students. Hence, I choose to specialise in 5-13yo age group.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My mum has been a Teaching Assistant all her life. I saw how kind and patient she was with each one of her students. She is my role model. I believe that patience and kindness are the two biggest assets a teacher can have.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, kindness, punctuality, and good organisation. The latter is very important as if students can get a sense that you, as a tutor, are not well-organised, they lose all respect for you.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

It took me a while to understand that almost no students are taught effective revision and study techniques at school. Pupils often have to figure this out themselves. I wish my school progress would have been x3 if a teacher helped me to understand the learning techniques that are best suited to me. This is something I do with all of my pupils in our first session.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Attention span and motivation is by far the biggest limiting factor for my students. This is especially true for younger pupils I teach.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is electronics and computer assembly. I love seeing children put a computer together for the first time. As a society, we no longer teach practical skills as widely as we used to and it's amazing to see the growth of a student's self-confidence when they build something cool!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I am an extremely reliable, punctual, and well-organised person. I also have, what I believe to be, a unique teaching method that uses computer and electronics assembly to aid with Maths and Physics learning. I have not seen this available on the market before.
