About Raquel
I am a PhD Candidate in Philosophy at Northwestern University. I have taught critical thinking related classes (including introductory formal logic) for the past 6 years at the university level. In my classes, students have fun forming arguments and learning to debate well and respectfully. These skills are useful in school, but also in our day-to-day! My current research is interested in how literature makes us more sympathetic to the experiences of others. I am curious about the educational power of media; how do we learn to be better people through reading books, watching movies, or listening to podcasts? Moreover, what are the risks of engaging with dangerous media, and what even constitutes one kind of media as "dangerous"? While the main goal here is to impart students with tangible skills which they can apply in their professional and academic lives, I also want to ensure that the topics we engage with are ones which keep the students thinking, even when the meeting is over. The only way to really instill good habits, I believe, is through passion. My passion for literature has given me the opportunity to pursue my interests at the highest level, and I hope that my classes can evoke a similar passion in the students I have the pleasure of engaging with.

My classes are intended to empower students with the ability to thoughtfully engage with course material, think critically, and write strong argumentative essays. Using foundational critical thinking skills, I include exercises that encourage strong research, logical deduction, and argumentative essay writing practices. In our classes, we will critically analyze passages from challenging texts, brainstorm ideas to form an opinion, cross-reference other sources, and implement these strategies into academic writing to create compelling essays. With a double specialization in English Literature and Philosophy during my BA, and a Philosophy specialization in my MA, I am strongly familiar with a wide range of writing techniques across disciplines. Whether you are starting your first year of high school, finishing your undergraduate studies, or simply prepping for entrance exams, my classes are curated to improve your logical capacities and argumentative skills so you can produce writing that you're proud of.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I recently began studying with Raquel and would highly recommend it for anyone looking to enrich their education. Her deep understanding of literature, aesthetic philosophy and the pantheon of vital philosophers (modern and historical), has developed my learning already in a short period of time. I am beyond satisfied with her teaching and will continue to study with her for the foreseeable future.
I have worked with Raquel in several educational institutions over the last decade, and her passion for teaching and student support is unwavering. Her lessons are engaging and thoughtful, and she has always brought a warm and welcoming energy to the classroom. Her love for creative writing is an unusual pairing with her analytical philosophy background, but I know that her appreciation for both these forms of writing has undoubtedly given her a well-rounded approach to language, communication, and argumentation. I would highly recommend reaching out to Raquel if you are looking to develop your critical reading, writing, and thinking skills. Or if you are looking for essay or argumentative writing support. She can give you the support you need to be successful at the undergraduate level!
