  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always been a passionate geographer from a young age. As I grew older, geoinformatics and GIS quickly became some of my favourite aspects of geography. I was fascinated by the ability to create maps, analyse spatial data, and better understand the world we live in through geographic information.
My interest in tutoring developed naturally alongside this passion. I enjoy helping others understand complex concepts and seeing students gain confidence in subjects that may initially seem challenging. Private tutoring allows me to pass on my knowledge, support students individually, and help them develop practical skills that they can apply in real-world situations
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students.

I teach GIS and Geoinformatics, which are essentially fields within spatial science. GIS combines geography, data analysis, and technology to understand patterns, relationships, and processes that occur across space.
Some of the topics I particularly enjoy discussing with students include cartography (the art and science of map-making), spatial analysis, and problem-solving using GIS tools. I enjoy working through real-world problems where GIS can be used to answer important questions, from environmental analysis and urban planning to disaster risk and climate studies.
What I enjoy most is helping students realise that GIS is not just software, it is a powerful way of thinking about the world and analysing spatial information.
  • 3) Did you have any role models or a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, I had an excellent geography teacher called Mr Barasa who greatly inspired my interest in the subject. His enthusiasm for geography made the subject come alive, and he encouraged us to think about the world in a curious and analytical way.
He played a key role in nurturing my love for geography, and to this day I hold very fond memories of his lessons. His teaching style showed me how powerful good teaching can be, and it continues to influence how I approach tutoring today.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor must first and foremost be knowledgeable in their subject area. Having a deep understanding of the material allows you to explain concepts clearly and answer students’ questions effectively.
However, knowledge alone is not enough. A good tutor must also be patient, supportive, and approachable. Every student learns differently, so it is important to adapt explanations and teaching methods to suit the individual. Kindness, encouragement, and genuine care for students’ progress are also essential qualities.
Ultimately, a good tutor helps students not only understand the subject but also build confidence in their own abilities.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of the most memorable lessons I learned in geography was the idea that geographers strive to “know the world better than anyone else.”
This idea stayed with me because geography is not just about memorising places on a map, it is about understanding how people, environments, and processes interact across the planet. GIS takes this idea even further by allowing us to analyse real-world data and uncover patterns that are not immediately visible.
That concept continues to motivate me today. Whether creating maps or analysing spatial data, the goal is always to better understand the world and help others see those patterns as well.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

One of the main challenges when learning GIS is becoming familiar with the different software platforms available. At first, learning multiple tools and interfaces can feel overwhelming.
However, over time I realised that beneath the different interfaces, many of the core concepts are the same. Once you understand the underlying principles of spatial data, projections, analysis, and mapping, it becomes much easier to adapt to new software.
This experience also helps me when teaching students, because I can guide them through the learning process and show them how to focus on the concepts rather than being intimidated by the tools.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion?

I genuinely enjoy teaching and engaging with students. Teaching not only allows me to share knowledge but also helps me continue learning myself. Every student asks different questions and approaches problems in unique ways, which keeps the subject exciting.
I am particularly passionate about helping students see the practical value of GIS and spatial thinking, and how these skills can be used in many careers such as environmental science, urban planning, disaster risk analysis, and climate research.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions )?

I believe a Superprof is someone who is knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely committed to helping students succeed. I always aim to create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and tackling new challenges.
I enjoy breaking down complex ideas into simple explanations and helping students build confidence in their abilities. Most importantly, I am always willing to adapt my teaching approach to meet each student’s needs and help them achieve their goals.
