I have a passion for helping others understand the natural world and have also enjoyed education (my dad is a teacher).
I'm doing a PhD on elephants and climate change at the Department of Ocean Science at Bangor University in North Wales (odd combination I know...).
I believe complex topics can be made accessible and engaging. I have 3+ years of tutoring experience for universities.

My lessons are tailored to each student's needs, but I am goal-oriented. During my free introductory session, we'll define clear, achievable goals and develop a plan to work towards them (whether that's submitting an assignment, finding a job, or even weekly academic check-ins).
I am a hands-on teacher, and I find demonstration is essential. I'll break down complex ideas, code, or writing into manageable chunks we can go through together. Then I'll outline steps you can take outside of the tutorial session so you can achieve your goal.
Lessons typically last 1 hour, but can be adapted, and I have 3+ years of experience tutoring university students (including postgraduate supervision) to lean on.

Sam and I are colleagues at Bangor University, and started our PhD studies at the same time. I’ve worked with him both on general academic tasks and, in particular, developing my GIS skills.
I had previously been doing map-based work in RStudio, but Sam introduced me to QGIS as an alternative. As a GIS novice, Sam taught me everything, from creating a project to calculating environmental variables from satellite data. Sam was patient, listened to my goals, and explained things in a way that made GIS enjoyable and gave me the confidence to work independently with it.
