About Lindsay

I graduated from High School as salutatorian, and I received our school's prestigious Excellence in Science Award. I entered Wesleyan University in 2008, where I worked in a cognitive development lab for 3 years, attended a summer research program at MIT, and earned honors in psychology for my senior thesis work. I graduated from Wesleyan University in 2012 with a 3.95 GPA and degrees in Neuroscience and Behavior, Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Psychology. After graduating, I worked as a clinical research coordinator at Columbia Medical Center's eating disorder clinic for 2 years, and then a research assistant in a molecular therapeutics lab at Columbia Medical Center for the following 2 years. I entered SUNY Downstate's MD/PhD program in 2016, and have completed 2 years of medical school and 4 years of graduate school. I will graduate with both degrees in 2025.

I've mentored many medical students at SUNY Downstate Medical Center through teaching subject material, lab techniques, and how to develop unique research projects. This past summer, I was a full time graduate student mentor for female high school and college students interested in pursuing a career in scientific research. I worked with a group of five students to determine a question they were interested in answering, and how to develop a hypothesis to answer said question through literature searches. I taught them complex methods to gather data supporting (or refuting) their hypotheses followed by the statistical analysis process. At the end of the summer, students presented their results to fellow classmates and doctors working at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

I've found a passion in passing down my knowledge to students interested in exploring their own interest in scientific research. As I consider my future career options, I know that teaching and mentorship will be a huge part of what I do. It is extremely important in the science field for people at each level of education to pass down the torch, so to speak. While it is important to teach lab techniques, it is arguably more important to inspire the next generation of scientists to develop their own passion.

While graduate students typically mentor undergraduate students, I think it is important for even younger students develop a passion for scientific research before entering college. Admission committees are very impressed when a student has experience working in a University research facility, as this opportunity is difficult to find. I love doing everything I can to help a student achieve their academic and professional goals.

How I can accomplish this for a student includes:

1. Tutoring subjects such as AP biology and AP psychology

2. Discussing how I became interested in the field and ways to work toward a graduate and/or medical degree

3. Working one on one in a laboratory setting to show how the experiments they do in their biology labs are put into practice, along with graduate level experiments

4. If you are interested in entering science fairs, I can help with developing a unique project which can be completed in the lab, as well as help with the written and presentation aspects of the project (I presented projects in regional science fairs my sophomore- senior years of high school)

5. Help with college admission essays (for older students)

6. Finally, I'm happy to write a recommendation letter for college, or any other program that requires one.

Less than 30% of the world's researchers are women. My mentorship will be best for a female student, as I can help her develop confidence and empowerment in the ability to succeed.

Rates will be discussed depending on time spent in lab versus time spent tutoring/working on written assignments and presentations. Web tutoring is possible, but all mentorship is most beneficial in person (and of course there is the research mentorship in the lab)
