As someone who has always struggled with grammar and essay construction, despite pursuing a degree in that very field, I can attest that the only thing that keeps making me want to learn grammar, want to learn rhetoric, want to learn syntax, is that they are essential of the books, authors, and philosophers that wound me every time I read them. I would hate to see people give up on learning about the history of ideas, just because they are anxious––and understandably so––about where one puts a semicolon. The only thing that did not discourage me from pursuing an education in reading and writing, when I found out that I had a learning disability in both those areas, was that I knew that everything I loved was placed on the other side of ignorance, and when that happens, the only thing that can fulfill one’s desire is knowledge. That is why it is my first and foremost goal to get my students interested in the things they are writing about; a goal which one-on-one tutoring will be extremely helpful for because it allows me to tailor my curriculum to my student’s areas of interest, thereby making it easier to find a corresponding academic text that might pique their curiosity. So let’s struggle to find the words for the things we care about the most together!
