About Helen
Hi, I'm Helen, a recent physics graduate from Durham University. I've been tutoring for over 5 years now, over 500 hours taught, and absolutely love it. The main subject I really teach is confidence and fun, my real job is to ignite that spark and enjoyment of science and maths again in the student. I do this by teaching all the things that school doesn't - how to memorise, how to think like an examiner, how to understand what the exam questions want from you and how to hack into your individual thinking style and use it to conquer exams.
I'm currently a Master's student at the University of the Azores, focusing research on whales. I use physics in my study of biology - For example, the back of the skull of the Sperm whale is an almost perfect shape of a parabolic mirror, reflecting and focusing the echolocation sound waves out to pinpoint the whale's prey: Giant squid! Not only that, but a thin sheen of air coats the bone plate, ramping up the impedance to act like a shiny mirror for the sound.
I love showing my students the active processes of science - how what they are learning is the foundations of scientific discovery. I work so that my lessons take students out of the fear of exams, and whether they’re progressing fast enough, and nullify that fear so that the learning can begin again. To see that spark of interest that’s not self-conscious any more, but simply says “Wow, I didn’t know that’s how that works! That’s cool!”

I'm a tutor who has had a wide range of exam and learning experiences. I know what it feels like to be lost in the theory, not understanding anything and having my grades hit the bottom of the barrel. I took all the fear in education and personally turned it around through working out tonnes of exam techniques that no teacher had ever given me. If you've had a bad experience with science and maths, I've been there before - I know how to get out of it!
I tailor my sessions to your individual learning style. I work with you to find your favourite ways of learning and then we fill our lessons with fun and highly effective ways to learn using your style.
We first work together by letting me analyse and give you a full diagnostic description of how you're working and tackling the problems. We also heavily cover exam technique and confidence boosting. There's a big divide between the concepts in class and the way the exam wants the questions answered. I can teach you all the unspoken rules in how to know what the exam wants from you.
