About Natalie
Hi! I’m currently a third-year Physiotherapy student at the University of Sydney and have been playing the violin for over 10 years. Music has been a significant part of my life, both individually and collaboratively, and I’m passionate about sharing that experience with my students.
Over the years, I have performed in orchestra, symphony and chamber ensemble settings, which helped me develop strong ensemble skills, musical awareness, and an appreciation for collaboration. Playing in these groups strengthened my sense of rhythm, timing, listening skills, and the ability to blend with others — all of which influence how I teach my students. I encourage them not only to play accurately, but to truly listen and make music with intention.
I have been privately tutoring violin for nearly two years, working primarily with beginner to early intermediate students. Through this experience, I’ve learned how to tailor lessons to each student’s learning style and pace, ensuring they feel both challenged and supported. I aim to create a calm, positive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes as part of the learning process.
In addition to violin, I have also participated in choir and band, which has broadened my overall musicianship and strengthened my understanding of pitch, harmony, and musical expression. I believe having a well-rounded musical background allows me to teach more holistically and help students appreciate music from a more multi-faceted perspective.

Teaching Approach and Methodology
My approach to tutoring violin is centered around patience, enjoyment, and building a strong technical foundation. I believe that students learn best when they feel supported and not rushed, so I prioritize creating a positive and encouraging learning environment where they can grow at their own pace. Developing confidence is just as important as developing technique, especially in the early stages of learning an instrument.
I focus strongly on fundamentals before progressing to more advanced material. This includes posture, bow hold, rhythm accuracy, and intonation. By ensuring these basics are secure, students are better equipped to tackle more challenging repertoire with confidence and musicality. I also incorporate engaging pieces and exercises that make lessons enjoyable, as I believe that fostering a love for music is key to long-term progress.
Typical Lesson Length
Lessons typically range from 30 minutes to one hour, depending on the student’s age, level, and concentration span. For younger beginners, 30-minute sessions are often ideal to maintain focus and enthusiasm, while more advanced students may benefit from longer sessions to work on technique and repertoire in greater depth.
Qualifications and Experience
I have previous experience providing private violin lessons in Hong Kong, where I worked with beginner and novice students. Aside from teaching, I also have experience playing in orchestra and symphony, which strengthened my musicianship, ensemble awareness, and understanding of musical collaboration.
Lesson Level and Age Range
My lessons are suited for beginners to early intermediate students (up to approximately Grade 5 ABRSM equivalent). I have experience teaching children aged 8–10 and am comfortable and open to working with adults and especially young learners, helping them build both technical skills and confidence in their playing.
