About Ugne

Ugne Peistaraite is a Lithuanian pianist, educator and researcher. In 2018, she graduated with distinction from Master of Science (MSc) in Performance Science at the Royal College of Music (RCM), London where she is continuing her research focusing on the scientific understanding of music performance as a part-time PhD student. Her MSc research project, investigating how emotion regulation processes relate to quality of practice in musicians, produced significant findings which were presented at the University of Cambridge, University of Sheffield, and at the International Symposium for Performance Science 2019 in Melbourne. The study then got published in one of the most cited scientific journals Frontiers in Psychology. Ugne’s current exciting PhD project is looking at the role of emotional intelligence for Western classical musicians' quality of practice and performance.
Her findings have been presented at various universities across the world, including Ibero-Americano University in Mexico City where she also received a conference prize (2024), Shanghai Music Conservatoire (2025), Yale University (2026) and others.
Alongside, Ugne gives lectures and workshops at the RCM, Imperial College London and at other various educational institutions and events for musicians.

Ugne has a strong educational background as a pianist. In 2009 Ugne graduated from J. Naujalis Music Gymnasium (Kaunas, Lithuania), where she studied with respected piano teacher Birute Kumpikiene. She then studied for her Bachelor’s and Master’s Diploma supplemented with a Pedagogy Diploma at the Lithuanian Music and Theatre Academy (LMTA), where she was under the tutelage of pianist Prof Aleksandra Zvirblyte. In 2011 Ugne participated in the Erasmus Exchange programme, studying at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland with Professor Juhani Lagerspetz.

Ugne is laureate of several international music competitions as a soloist and collaborative pianist, and has also participated in various masterclasses with internationally renowned pianists, such as Christopher Elton, Eugen Indjic, Petras Geniusas, Philipe Giusiano, Angela Hewitt, Valentina Berman, Paolo Giacometti, Vera Nosina, and more.

In 2015 Ugne was awarded the Merit Diploma by Lithuanian Republic President Dalia Grybauskaite in recognition of her achievements.

Teaching is a very important part of Ugne’s professional life. She has over 15 years of teaching experience, varying from private tuition to working in a conservatory, and tutoring pupils aged between 4 to 75. She has taught both amateurs and professional musicians, and prepared pupils for ABRSM, Trinity and other exam board assessments. While at the LMTA Ugne studied a Pedagogy module which included didactic, course teaching methodology, pedagogic repertoire, developmental psychology, education psychology and pedagogical practice. In 2015, she undertook a traineeship as piano teacher and collaborative pianist at the Braganca Music and Dance Conservatory and later at Lisbon Superior School of Music in Portugal. Between 2015-2017 Ugne has been a piano lecturer at the annual Adult Summer Music Academy held at the Lithuanian Music and Theatre Academy.

Ugne very much enjoys juggling these different areas of career which, while different, are all very much linked and inform each other, research being the overarching element of them all.
She is constantly looking for ways in which to improve her teaching and performing, and this aspiration is one of the reasons that she is currently studying for a PhD in Performance
Science.

Trained as a solo concert pianist (BMus, MMus) I also hold a pedagogy degree (BMus) which informed me about the subtle art of teaching others. Alongside, for the past 10 years I've been deepening my knowledge of music performance through the scientific lens of performance psychology (MSc, currently finishing PhD at RCM). Teaching is where all my different passions to music performance marry each other as I use my multidisciplinary knowledge to approach each student with a personalised approach informed by my professional pianism, pedagogy, empirical knowledge in performance psychology and my extensive over 15 years experience.

I teach motivated students of all ages and levels (from beginners to Grade 8 ABRSM, Trinity etc and beyond). Most common lesson durations are 1h, 45min and 30min, (in some cases with very young ones we do 20min).
