Joseph teaches in a manner that is personal to each individual. His aim is to work with his students at their own pace to cultivate the needed skills at the instrument and beyond. At the heart of the teaching is the importance of musical communication with the belief that that is fundamentally the core of technique. In addition to aspects taught in graded syllabuses such as scales, sight reading etc., Joseph encourages personal musical exploration and expression to allow his students to find their musical selves. Often, a broadening of awareness to the nuts and bolts of music and therefore an opportunity to further grasp the deeper meanings of it comprises his work.
Meaning, of course, takes many forms in music, whether it be the visceral rhythm and harmony in a lot of Jazz, the 'feel good' nature of pop, or the inherent philosophy found within the highly structured and crafted works of Beethoven or Schoenberg and anything in between. Whatever the genre, Joseph is happy to teach it. While methodical in his approach, Joseph aims for a relaxed and friendly environment with the needs of each student in mind and has experience teaching those with ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism and Down's Syndrome
