About Kayla

In 2017 I was the sole volunteer in my sons classroom and one on one tutored his whole class and got the students from reading levels of 5-9 to majority of them being on a 20-25. I started out with 3 kids per day and ended up with 17 out of 21 coming in to see me and begging to do more words and spelling so much so that I was there from 845am until 1045am and had to come back from 1-230pm just to get all the students in. They thrived and it was all due to their own hard work and with them all falling in love with learning and tackling challenges and smashing their goals. Even the most quiet, shy and withdrawn kids came to be the life of the room with a little coaching and showing them that the can achieve more then they think they can and I was merely the person in the background spurring them on and holding back the tears as these kids triumphed. It was such an honor!

About the lesson

I love to read, to write and to spell.
I have worked with children from the age of 6 and seen them tackle harder and trickier books with every lesson and even with some stumbling points they got through them and were so proud of themselves.
I like to make the environment around a students learning comfortable.
No distractions and I don't force the work on them, they are mini human beings and just like adults they have days where their head isn't in the game, where they don't feel like doing the work and days where things are happening at home, in their sporting groups or just in their own personal self and they need someone to see that in them, then for that person to be able to think on their feet and change up the lesson in order for them to feel happy and for that want to be there to continue.
I love rewarding people too. Something as simple as a sticker choice can mean the most to kids, having a stash of lollipops or if at school, having an ice block voucher from the tuck shop paid for them, it's simple.
If you want people to enjoy the experience of learning, you have to learn about them.
Figure out that the quiet, more reserved child will come out of his shell when he is comfortable, play games, say words wrong in order for them to laugh at you and tell you the correct word. Or figuring out that the girl who wants to get everything done perfectly, who pushes herself and grumbles when she can't get something straight away or makes an error is just passionate about learning, is already willing and wanting to learn as much as she can at such a young age. Be in the moment with them, encourage them when they make errors and celebrate them outrageously when they triumph, it costs you nothing to tell someone they are doing an amazing job and that they should be proud of their efforts.
Learning is fun and shouldn't stress you out.
