About Josh
Hi, I’m Josh Merten! I’m a 2020 grad that took English Advanced, Extension and Extension 2 for the HSC. In my final grades, I was able to achieve a mark of 94 in English Advanced, 47/50 in Extension 1 and 45/50 in Extension 2. In those subjects, I was taught by a Head Marker of the English Advanced and Extension courses who helped me gain insight to the perspective of markers and an in-depth knowledge of the syllabus.

English for the HSC is a case of once you know and have practiced the formula, writing well becomes an unbreakable habit. My aim in helping current students is to help them understand what it is exactly that markers look for in a response, and how to translate that into a fluent essay or piece of creative writing.
For a quick example, every marker spends about 5 minutes reading every essay for the HSC. That’s not a lot! So, how can we signpost our essay with easily noticeable things for them to ‘tick’ as they scan through the pages? What should those signposts be?
This kind of thinking is what can bring a C student to a B student to an A student, and I feel is essential to getting good grades in HSC English.
