About Nicholas
Bassoonist, Pianist, Educator, and Composer. I received a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from University of New Hampshire and a Master's degree in Bassoon Performance from Arizona State University. My online lessons are just as tailored and unique for each student as in person, and I look forward to meeting people all over the country from the safety of our own houses!

My teaching method incorporates a theoretical and practical understanding of music and how to mix the two into a comprehension of sound which elevates the student through performance. My aim is to show students not only how to produce a lovely, appropriate character and sound on their instrument, but to also teach them why their sound is appropriate at any given time. Often I find that the "why" in performance is missing, and students are asked to blindly follow the advice of their professors and conductors without fully understanding the reason for their musical decision. While music is highly subjective and taste plays a major role in decision-making when it comes to the nuance of performance practice, guiding students through the narrow path that is understanding this nuance is an essential element of preparing future professional musicians to make their own musical decisions based on their own taste and knowledge of performance practice.
How this manifests in the classroom can vary depending on each student's prior experience with music, their cultural background, and their general education level thus far. For example, a more advanced, older student might have an easier time grasping the abstract concepts introduced off-hand during a lesson, with little extra explanation necessary. This means that potentially less time would be dedicated to introducing new performance practice concepts or potentially introducing even more of them in the same span of time. On the other hand, a newer, younger student might require a deeper explanation of these complex concepts to fully understand how they apply to decision-making in music, and therefore lessons may incorporate longer periods of discussion and cooperation learning about fewer, more base-level topics such as dynamics (loud/soft playing), tempo (speed of the 'beat'), or tuning (how exactly the individual pitches line up with our standard tuning system). Tailored plans for each lesson are based on prior lessons, discussions with students, and my experience with teaching. My aim is to bring up students who are both practically proficient in technique and theoretically proficient in musical knowledge. These two major goals, which are no small feat to be sure, are in my opinion the building blocks for a successful musician and therefore vital to the early upbringing of newer students and to the continued progress of older students.
