About Kathryn
I've been a research biologist since I was 17, but I've been passionate about the life sciences for as long as I can remember! I have a B.Sc in Biology from McGill University where I graduated honours with distinction. A few weeks ago, I successfully defended my M.Sc thesis in Genome Science and Technology at the University of British Columbia. I have hands-on research experience in virology, evolutionary ecology, molecular biology, biophysics, botany, and genomics. I've also worked as a professional science communicator researching for CBC nature documentaries, and writing study materials for high-level biology courses. On a volunteer basis, I've also worked at schools and museums to inspire children and teens to get involved in STEM fields.

One of the biggest problems with biology, especially at the high school and early university levels, is that so much of what you learn is just memorization. This can make the life sciences extremely unpalatable for students who have a hard time with memory and focus. When teachers expect students to extract minute details from textbooks, it can also be severely detrimental to those who have trouble with word processing. As a result, many students who genuinely enjoy life science will give up on it early on.
My general approach when it comes to biology is to making learning more hands-on, and reduce the need for rote memorization by explaining the deeper mechanisms that underly difficult-to-understand phenomena. Using my extensive background knowledge, I can connect confusing ideas to help you fully understand the theory and context of what you're learning in class. My goal as a tutor is to share my excitement and enthusiasm for the life sciences, and to help design a tutoring experience tailored to what each student needs. Whether that's practice problems, hand-drawn diagrams, or simply explaining an idea in different words- I will work to optimize the teaching experience for you.
