About Ben

I’m Ben Ramsden, an award-winning composer and musician based in London with a background that bridges classical and popular music. I’ve had the opportunity to perform across Europe, including at London’s Southbank Centre and Lyric Hammersmith, and have collaborated with a wide range of disciplines including theatre, film, and dance. I’m passionate about sharing the knowledge and techniques I’ve developed over the years with others. My goal is to help each student find their unique musical voice and express their creativity confidently. I’ve had the privilege of working with composers, dancers, filmmakers, and theatre professionals, which has shaped my approach to teaching—I bring a blend of real-world experience and a deep understanding of the compositional process into every lesson. Teaching is incredibly rewarding for me because it allows me to pass on not just technical skills, but also the confidence to explore one’s own artistic voice. I aim to create an environment where students feel inspired, challenged, and supported in their musical journey. Whether you’re just starting or are looking to deepen your compositional skills, I’d love to help you develop and refine your sound.

About the lesson

I tailor my teaching to the individual needs of each student, whether they’re beginners looking to develop their compositional voice or advanced musicians refining their orchestration and arranging skills. My approach is practical, creative, and rooted in real-world application—we’ll work on techniques that professional composers use, analyse existing works, and develop your unique musical voice and style through constructive feedback. Lessons typically last 60 minutes, but can be adjusted depending on the student’s needs. I can also offer guidance on notation, MIDI mock-ups, and preparing scores for performance or recording. I have over 10 years of experience as a professional award-winning composer, with work featured at Southbank Centre, BBC One, and BFI, and have collaborated with choreographers, filmmakers, and theatre directors. I studied at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and have extensive experience mentoring composition students, helping them develop their craft, confidence, and individual musical style. I teach all levels—from beginners interested in writing their first piece to experienced musicians preparing for university/conservatoire applications or professional commissions. Whether you're looking to explore new ideas, refine your technique, or build a portfolio, I’m happy to help!
