About Roger

Due to the changes in the post production environment over the last twenty years, moving from celluloid to digital recording, aspiring documentary editors do not have the opportunity to learn editing first hand from an editor. For this reason I am eager to pass on skills I have learnt over many years. From my extensive experience I can teach the nuts and bolts of the software. I have also cut scripted television drama which has a different approach altogether.

I am very patient and will help students learn quickly to be a professional editor. I don't get angry or loose my patience. I am very friendly!

If asked I can supply a list of productions I have worked on such as 'WarArt' with Eddie Redmayne and BAFTA wining programmes like 'South Africa's Gangs' with Ross Kemp.

I also have an extensive knowledge of scripted film editing, but my strengths lay in documentary structure and editing.

About the lesson

I have edited documentary film and television programmes for over 30 years using Avid and Premier Pro. Anyone can learn the software, I can teach the basics of the software quite quickly, but that is a tiny part of editing documentaries. Story telling is what film editing is about. From my extensive experience I can teach that. I have also cut scripted television drama which has a totally different approach altogether

Another important aspect of editing documentaries is the music. Sometimes it is composed especially for the programme other times library music is used. Fitting library music to match the high and lows in your story telling is vital, especially in documentaries. Audiences subconsciously take cues from the music. When your music ends, if used properly, it signals the end of a thought and the beginning of a new one.

This goes hand in hand with commentary. The right words.with the right pictures and music conveys complicated ideas in an informative and understandable way.
