About Matt Dark Sky

Hello, I’m Matt — a full-time music producer, mentor, and mix engineer with over 17 years of professional experience.

Alongside my own artist projects (Dark Sky / Benyayer), I’ve released multiple records internationally, including two studio albums on Modeselektor’s Monkeytown Records, and EPs on labels such as Ninja Tune, 50 Weapons, Tectonic, Last Night On Earth, Mister Saturday Night, Black Acre and others. My work has received extensive radio support and has accumulated over 30 million streams across digital platforms.

I’ve also officially remixed artists including Kelis, The xx, Bombay Bicycle Club, and Glass Animals, and collaborated with a wide range of artists across electronic and experimental music.

As a live performer and DJ, I’ve toured internationally for many years, playing venues and festivals such as Berghain, Panorama Bar, Fabric, Glastonbury, Sonar, Mutek, Dimensions, Corsica Studios, Phonox, Village Underground, and many more. Alongside artist work, I have extensive experience composing and producing music for film, television, theatre, and library use. Past clients include O2, GoPro, Pioneer, Oculus Rift, Nokia, Lucozade, The Louvre, Burberry, Amnesty International and many more.

I hold a Distinction in Fine Art (4D) from Central Saint Martins, with a focus on installation and time-based media, a background that strongly informs my approach to sound design, composition, and creative direction.

Technically, I work primarily in Ableton Live and have deep experience with synthesis, sampling, audio recording, processing and hybrid hardware/software workflows.

Alongside my professional work, I’ve spent the past several years mentoring producers 1:1, helping them finish music, develop a strong artistic identity, and gain confidence in their creative and technical ability.

Online sessions are held using Muse Sessions, which allows us to listen, view, and interact with your music software in real time.

My approach is fully tailored to your goals. Sessions typically focus on finishing tracks, developing ideas, improving arrangement and mixdowns, sound design, and building a more confident and efficient creative workflow.

We’ll work directly with your own music wherever possible, using it as the basis for focused, practical progress. We can also analyse and deconstruct released tracks that inspire you, breaking down structure, sound choices, and production techniques so you can apply them to your own work.

Alongside this, I’m happy to share insights from my own projects and releases, offering perspectives on creative decision-making, workflow, and long-term development as an artist. For those interested in sound design, sessions can cover synthesis, samplers, effects, routing, modular and practical ways to get the most out of the tools you already use, whether it be software or hardware.

I also offer guidance on the industry side of music, including preparing music for release, getting signed to labels, developing an artistic identity, self-releasing, content creation, and composing for film and TV.

These sessions are best suited to committed beginners through to intermediate producers who want clear feedback, direction, and momentum in their work.

Learn more about Matt Dark Sky

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

Hearing Chameleon by Herbie Hancock from my mum's tape collection made me want to learn sax but I actually fell in love with my sax teacher's drum kit.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Probably 90s R&B or Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient works.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

Asking a student to make a whole song using just one sound. This can be demanding but also very creatively rewarding.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Probably the bagpipes as it's very easy to sound bad very quickly on them.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

    Determination, patience, creativity
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Pharell - his work under The Neptunes inspired me a lot but I also feel like he'd have some great wisdom to share.

Prince - he was so talented but also so versatile plus I feel like he'd be super fun to hang out with.

Rick Rubin - more of an ideas man than a musician but having ideas in the studio and embracing different approaches can be invaluable when you're hitting walls.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Stay curious and embrace your signatures.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

Listening to the students' WIPs before the lesson, writing up feedback notes for them afterwards and allowing them to screen record the session.
