About Mike

My name is Mike Vitale. I am a singer-songwriter, guitarist, producer, mixing engineer, and musician. I have toured the United States playing music I have written and have had the pleasure of telling stories to people all over. This has all been through the beauty of studying music and being a lifelong student. The first music I ever deeply fell in love with was The Beach Boys and the work of Brian Wilson in Elementary School. However, my tastes in music know no bounds now. I have gone on to learn Composition and Music from California State University Fullerton and College of the Sequoias with their two-year music program, won songwriting competitions, performed at Folk Festivals such as the Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville, Texas and the Pensacola Beach Songwriters Festival in Pensacola Beach, Florida. I am an active student of my instrument (my favorite instructor being Ted Greene VIA the internet), and study electric guitar, acoustic guitar, classical guitar in a number of varying genres. I also write everything from Afro-Cuban Music to Folk to Rock to Blues to Country to Americana to Bluegrass to whatever strikes my fancy and conveys the story I am telling, best. I currently hang my hat in Los Angeles, CA. Eagle Rock to be specific.

I began teaching guitar when I was around 19 years old (I'll be 46 this year). I quickly noticed that no two people learn the same. No two people start with the same skill set or musculature.

I had a gifted student once, who could do things no one else could as a beginner—he however, never practiced.

I had another student who started at the same time, and had none of the blessings of the former mentioned. She, however, practiced, and has gone on to do amazing things.

Music is your adventure. I am your guide. You do a great deal of the work, if you want to call it that. It can be fun, and I can show you how to get to that as well.

- We can be pedagogical, and I can teach you how to read music, and ease you into the muscle memory necessary to perform chord changes and soloing, by reading. This works beautifully. But this is a choose-your-own adventure

- I can teach you by learning an accessible song that lights you up like the 4th of July inside your heart.

- I can teach you how to use the wonders of the internet to learn guitar. More importantly, I can teach you how to teach yourself guitar—the most powerful of attributes.

I would say that I specialize in intermediate and beginning guitar, and can also teach, and deeply enjoy, advanced guitar as well.

The practicing of music, becomes deep meditation over time. Think about it. You focus all your thoughts on one thing. Beginning meditation is to focus on just your breath.

A lot of where people don't see through to the end, is because they never experience this deep meditation, the chills down ones spine when resonating with music, and the exuberance of performing music with others and feeling it in your own body as a kinesthetic response. There are so many rewards to playing music, let alone, on a daily basis. My goal is to help you get to these diamonds, and for you to no longer need me to show you the way.

The goal of taking lessons, is to keep that instrument in your hands because you like it, not because you like the idea of it. I can help you to the former.
