About Kaya
I'm a nonbinary artist based in Ottawa, holding diplomas in Photography from Algonquin College and Photographic Arts and Production from SPAO, and currently pursuing a dual B.A. in Philosophy and Art History at Carleton University. My work integrates expertise in both commercial and fine art photography, blending documentary inquiry with introspective self-portraiture. Photography serves as my means of self-expression, allowing me to reclaim identity amidst past trauma, transformative life experiences, and ongoing mental health challenges. I often explore themes considered overlooked or taboo, such as sexuality, mental illness, and trauma, aiming to shed light on the intricacies of the human experience. My goal is to create art that fosters unity among diverse backgrounds, inviting viewers to confront life's complexities in an accessible manner.

My teaching style is hands-on, supportive, and flexible, tailored to your goals, whether you're learning camera basics, exploring new techniques, or refining a creative project. I work with beginners, students, and emerging artists who want to strengthen both their technical skills and creative voice.
Lessons often begin with a check-in and goal setting, followed by focused instruction or exercises, and end with feedback and clear next steps. I can guide you through photography fundamentals, retouching in Photoshop or Capture One, bookmaking in InDesign, or working with alternative mediums like film and cyanotypes.
With two photography degrees and an active contemporary art practice, I stay connected to what's happening in the field and can help you navigate both the technical and conceptual sides of your work. What sets me apart is my ability to help students bring their artistic vision to life by bridging creative intention with technical execution.
