About Shankara

A lover of sound and self-expression through music, whether it is through saxophone performance or composition. I am a graduate of the Berklee College of Music where I learned how to write, arrange, and perform music in a variety of styles including jazz, pop, rock, classical, and score to picture. I play tenor/alto saxophone and flute, with a heavy emphasis on improvisation and tone quality. I have been curious about music for as long as I can remember. I began playing flute at the age of eight inspired by the music of Howard Shore in The Lord of the Rings. I was encouraged to learn by ear and to improvise at a young age by my father for which I am very grateful. I was born in Los Angeles but moved to Oahu, Hawai'i when I was seven. I picked up alto saxophone at fourteen to play in the jazz band at my school and fell deeply in love with the jazz idiom through the music of Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, and Herbie Hancock. I decided to study music at Berklee upon the suggestion of a mentor of mine, bassist Dean Taba in Honolulu, and started playing tenor saxophone to become a more well-rounded musician. I have played many gigs over the years in the Boston, Honolulu, and New York areas. I have also arranged music for the likes of professionals like pianist Kris Davis. I have taught beginner and intermediate woodwind students in the past and have seen improvement in every single one. More importantly, I have seen my students' love for music and sound grow to new heights. Mahalo

I believe in music as an outlet for self expression, communication, and enjoyment. I meet students at their level and teach instrumental technique, ear training, and improvisation to give them the skills needed for a high level of musicianship and a connection with their musical identity.

A typical lesson would start with asking the student what they want out of music. I would then assess their skill level by asking them to play me something they enjoy and giving them constructive feedback on things like intonation, articulation, and phrasing. I believe that these three aspects of music are most important for creating a professional sounding instrumentalist. If they are new to the instrument I would guide them through making an embouchure and learning how to get a clear and defined sound. A lot of my lessons have a heavy emphasis on call and response as well as other ear training methods like transcription. I believe a strong ear is what sets a good musician apart from a great one.

I am a trained jazz improvisor and a big part of what makes music fun is improvisation and self expression. I guide students through the process of playing what they hear in their head as well as what is on the page.

The lessons I teach are for beginner level flute and saxophone players as well as intermediate players in middle school and highschool.
