About Freya
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught both in schools and privately for many years, and I have a 100% success rate - all of my students not only pass exams but excel, often achieving Merits or Distinctions. I use the ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall Boards as well as LCM for Music Theatre exams.
I currently teach singing at The Dragon School, and I have previously taught at both Pinewood School and at d'Overbroecks, Oxford. I also taught singing and music theory at the Purcell School of Music for 2 years as well as working as their Outreach Coordinator, running music workshops and tours all over the country.
As a professional singer I perform regularly with ensembles such as BBC Singers, London Voices, RSVP, Philharmonia Voices and Ex Cathedra. Career highlights include solos with Birmingham Opera Company in Stockhausen's Mittwoch aus Licht directed by Graham Vick, film soundtracks (including Interstellar, Maleficent, The Hobbit and Hunger Games series) and I have performed solo twice at the Wigmore Hall as part of the Voiceworks contemporary music series. Opera credits include Amastris in Handel's Xerxes, Dido in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, The Mother in Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors, Julia Bertram in Jonathan Dove's Mansfield Park, both Annina and Flora in Verdi's La Traviata, Cherubino in Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, 2nd Lady/2nd Boy in Mozart's the Magic Flute, Marc Antonio in Hasse's Marc Antonio e Cleopatra, and Hansel in Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretal. I also perform a lot of Gilbert and Sullivan, including Pitti-Sing in The Mikado, Edith in Pirates of Penzance, Hebe in HMS Pinafore, Iolanthe in Iolanthe, and Lady Angela in Patience.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I'm a friendly and experienced professional singer and teacher, singing with a variety of opera companies and professional choirs and as a session singer. I believe that no matter the style of singing, strong vocal technique is essential for success.
I work to make sure my lessons are fun, challenging (in a good way!) and I tailor my approach to the individual.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Singing in a variety of styles, from classical to pop, rock and music theatre. I also teach Music Theory, Harmony, Aural and Practical Musicianship, and tutor students for their GCSE and A Level examinations.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a 1st Class hons. Degree in Music from the University of York, and both MPerf and MMus in Vocal Performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £35 per hour (£20 per half hour) if you come to my home. If I am travelling to you I sometimes charge travel, depending on how far it is!
- Where do you teach?
I usually teach at my home in Wallingford, though I am willing to travel and to teach online.
- When are you available?
I teach during the week in both the day time and the evening, and I am also available some weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I have experience teaching all ages - from age 3-90! Everyone is welcome, and no previous experience is required.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
It would depend on the needs and wishes of the student. In the past I have prepared my students for ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall grades, Music Theatre grades, and for entry into Music colleges and theatre schools. I also don't pressure my students into having to take grades if they just want to sing for fun!
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I do online lessons via zoom, skype, facetime and whatsapp.
