About Mark

I am Mark Farmer, an experienced trainer and adult educator with 25 years of professional experience across local government, the voluntary sector and the NHS.

For around four years I owned and ran my own English language teaching business, working one-to-one and in small groups with hundreds of adult students. That experience taught me how to break complex material down into clear, manageable steps and how to teach at the right pace for the person in front of me — skills I now bring to AI tutoring.

In my current senior roles I advise NHS England at national level on mental health policy, serve as a National Advisor to the Royal College of Psychiatrists, working on Advancing Mental Health Equity, International Congress and Enabling Environments, and chair a UK registered charity. I am also a member of the Royal College of Physicians' Patient and Carer Network, a former voting lay member of the NHS England Quality Committee, and have served on several NHS Trust boards. These roles require me to read, summarise and communicate complex information with care every day — and increasingly to use AI tools to do that work efficiently and well.

My professional development includes the Institute of Leadership and Management certificate, PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner project management certification, Lean Change Agent training together with two MBA-level modules at the University of Warwick, Mental Health First Aid (refreshed in 2025), Oliver McGowan autism awareness training, and Neurodiverse Connections training in supporting autistic people. I hold a BA (Hons) in Youth and Community Development from De Montfort University.

What this means for you as a student: you will be taught by someone who is calm, patient, well-organised and used to working with people of all backgrounds and abilities. I will not blind you with jargon. I will not rush you. And I will only ever teach you what I genuinely know and use in my own work.

Outside of tutoring I enjoy being in nature, reading, listening to pop/dance/electronic music and going to the theatre for musicals and plays.

I help people who feel left behind by the AI boom catch up calmly, without jargon and without the hype. My students are often older professionals, charity staff, healthcare workers, and small business owners who have heard about ChatGPT and the rest for months and quietly want someone patient to sit alongside them and show them how to use it properly.

A bit about my background. I ran my own English language teaching business for around four years, teaching hundreds of students. I have also worked across local government, the voluntary sector, and the NHS for over 25 years, delivering training and development to colleagues along the way. I currently advise NHS England at national level on mental health policy and serve on a Royal College of Physicians patient and carer network. I am also Chair of a UK charity.

What I'm not is a software engineer — and I don't teach as one. My approach is the opposite: take whatever you're actually trying to get done, and use AI to do it better, faster, or with less stress.

Who my lessons are well suited to:

People in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond who want to feel confident with AI rather than overwhelmed.

Charity, non-profit and small business staff who want to save time on admin, drafting, summarising, and routine tasks.
Healthcare professionals and patient/carer representatives who want to use AI sensibly within the realities of NHS and clinical work.

Beginners who have tried ChatGPT once or twice and walked away thinking "is that it?" — there is a lot more to it than most people realise.

Anyone with additional needs — I have completed Mental Health First Aid training and the Oliver McGowan autism awareness training and am comfortable adapting my pace and style for autistic learners, learners with chronic illness, and learners with mental health needs.

What we'll cover (you choose):

Getting comfortable with ChatGPT and Claude — what they're good at, what they're bad at, and how to ask better questions.

Using AI for writing: emails, reports, meeting notes, fundraising appeals, social media posts. Sounding like you, not a robot.
Summarising long documents, transcribing meetings, drafting agendas.

AI tools built into apps you already use — Gmail, Outlook, Word, Google Docs, Excel.

Practical AI workflows for charities and small businesses: thank-you letters, donor communications, intake forms, simple automations.

Anything specific you're stuck on — bring a real task and we'll work through it together.

Sessions are 1-to-1 over Zoom (or in person if you're nearby). One hour is typical. I share my screen, you share yours, and we work on real things — not made-up exercises. After each lesson I send a short follow-up email summarising what we covered and what to try before next time.
There is no commitment. Most people start with one or two sessions and decide from there. Some return weekly for a month or two; others just want a single afternoon to demystify the whole thing.
The first session is free. No catch — I would rather you find out whether I am useful to you before paying for anything.
Get in touch through Superprof and we'll find a time that works.
